Fossicking Sites Near Ayers Rock?
« on: June 15, 2017, 07:05:20 AM »
A friend and I are planning a trip to Ayers Rock (flying into Sydney) late July and I was wondering if there are places to look for agate, petrified wood, or anything else interesting near those locations?  Thanks for the help!

We generally call Ayers Rock, Uluru now - Uluru is the name usually used now and I feel the indigenous name is more respectful to the original landowners (who incidentally still own this piece of land and manage it in conjunction with the Nat Parks dept).

Would suggest considering Gemtree if you are in the region.

You would be looking for garnet and zircon here.

Harts Range is a bit further away from Alice Springs but may work with your itinerary.

There are other members here who are much more familiar with this area and hopefully will provide more specific suggestions for you.

Enjoy your trip - lots of great stuff to see.

Much of that part of the country is taken up with Pitjantjatjara homelands. Although there are roads through many of these lands you are not allowed to camp or stay in those areas without a permit that can be sought from the councils. From memory there are 13 of these Pitjantjatjara homelands and I doubt they would readily accept an application to fossick. Nepabunna has a very good quality chrysoprase, I am sure you could google the contact for the councils. Maybe you could enquire about visiting Nepabunna to see the chrysoprase and find out if the deposits are being worked.

Thank you both for your replies and attention to appropriate respectful reference!  My wife and I lived in China for 9 years and so understand the need for guidance/correction!  All help is welcomed!

Anything near Sydney?

Probably look at Oberon for sapphire fossicking - it is about 2:45 hours drive from Sydney.  Lots of discussion on here about Oberon - Vulcan State Forest, Native Dog Creek, Black Springs are a few locations that you can search on.  Lots of members here familiar with the area.  Plus Jenolan Caves is an interesting place to visit (not to sample but beautiful cave formations to look at and historic accommodation to stay overnight if you wish).
