Title: Yin Yang in Rose quartz and blue lace agate
Post by: Rockgirl on July 01, 2015, 02:45:19 PM
This piece I cut for a facebook competition and it really was a step out of the ordinary for me and had a steep learning curve. Really happy I gave it a go though!
Sadly I chipped it in the final polishing stage - it caught on the wheel and hit the ground at high speed  :'(   Best to just stop when you are tired as that is when you stuff up!
I never re-doped it as the chip is in a wedge shape on the edge and think it would shatter out if I try polish it any more.
Other than that I am pretty happy with it!

Getting a nice join for gluing was time consuming but think like anything it would get easier with practice. I got it as close as I could with a dremel and diamond burs then I made a paste out of carborundum and Vaseline and rubbed the two halves together to get them nice and flush.

That looks great - what are you using for the joints?

I used Epoxy 330
It is the first time I have ever glued a rock/stone so went with something mentioned regularly on gem related posts.
It worked a treat!  It didnt have a strong smell, mixed up easily and didnt stick to grease proof paper as stated which I had my doubts about.

that is a great idea. I can see a lot of ideas floating around my head. how did you cut the holes? did you drill the holes and then cut two tiny circles to fit the holes/dots??

Hi Sparklebug,
I used a diamond core drill and tried to keep it as straight as possible. The bits from the centre of the drill worked as being a bit smaller there was room for the glue so they became the inserts.
