Title: Fossicking from Coffs to Byron
Post by: MissyP on July 16, 2018, 08:17:26 PM
Hi ALFers hubby and I are going to hook up the van on Friday and head up the NSW North coast from Newcastle. I'd be grateful for any fossicking info between Coffs and Byron. Any type of rocks, I'm not fussy haha.
Cheers,
Melissa

My understanding is it is pretty lean until you get right up North unless you are happy to bypass up into the mountains at Gloucester to Armidale and then you can come back down either Dorrigo to Coffs or, for fossicking, via Glen Innes / Tenterfield and down to Casino.

I did see some pictures on one of the facebook forums in the last week or two of some nice small crystal caves / nodules that can be found in the rock somewhere around Ballina (just North) I think.  Other than that there should be some people from up that way but my understanding is there is some quite good spots but more well back in the hinterland from Byron.

Thanks MrSydney, figured as much but worth an ask. We are sticking to the coast road this time but once we get up to Byron, I'm hoping we can head in the direction of Mt Warning. Of course this hinges on the non-fossicking half being willing lol. We live only an hour from Gloucester and have had a look around up there.

I used to be a memberr of the Byron Bay lapidary group with its rooms at Tyagarah just out of the town. There is also a lapidary supplies business at nearby Ballina south of Byron. I have posted contact details below and I feel sure if you try these you will get useful information. Good luck and happy fossicking,.

Hi MissyP,

Out of interest is there anything around Gloucester (other than coal) or when you head up into the mountains just above?

I've always wondered as I pass that way occassionally.

We recently went for a drive up there and there was nothing much in the creeks, I was hoping for jasper or quartz. I guess it may depend where you go as its a big area. Had a nice time up the coast. Found some agate..yay! Also the beaches above Coffs were full of jasper and quartz so that was a bonus. I have taken photos of my treasures lol.

Put some pics in the gallery would be great!  Curious to see what you found on the beaches.
