Noodling is searching through old mullock heaps. Nudling sounds like dirty habit.

I always tell people I 'prospect' for gold, 'fossick' for gems and minerals and 'noodle' for opal. Noodling is just walking along and picking or scratching the surface for opal.

Nudling along.
Walking along quickly with the head bent forward.

Easy to see how this morphed into "Noodling".
