Title: Upper Bowman Barrington Tops
Post by: Trickynicky on February 10, 2010, 05:51:14 PM
I have been invited to stay on a property at Upper Bowman that backs onto the national park. The owner is a cattle man not a fossicker. Does anyone know if it worth while packing my fossicking gear for the trip.

Hi Trickynicky,

I don't know the Upper Bowman but when visiting a new area I always take a small hand pick and one of my smaller sieves or a sieve set if space permits.

In  new areas I like to go specking in the creeks first (armed with a hand pick) and if the geology looks promising I might come back with a sieve.  Look in the wash layer in the exposed sides of creek banks and the gravelly wash of the creek itself.

Cheers,
Fullerton

Hi,

in the Upper Bowman locality, there is gold from Bowman State Forest to the one south of it. Some of the gold is in old channels, well above the creeks and river of today. There is a pdf fact-sheet on the area on the dpi website.
As for the national park, if its the Upper Bowman River, there are sapphires (small), zircon and the best spinel place in Australia hidden up there, if your interested in either.

But you don't know until you sieve it. I've also got an opal potch producing spot near Glen Innes.

TG, I have found your information quite useful in my research of where to prospect in the Barrington area, I will report back in a few weeks once I make it out that way. I have not been able to locate the PDF fact sheet on the DPI website though. If you have any more info on tracking this down it would be very helpful,

Regards.
