Hi Chookie, there is a very detailed report on this gem tourmaline deposit that is available for free download through the SA dept mines website (PIRSA). Hope this link will take you straight to the report:

Let me know if you don't have any luck with this link.

Whoo Hoo Thank you Patrick,I just knew someone here could verify my old book.  I am packing!! ;D

Thought those photos might help pack your bags  ;) Keep in mind these were found over several trips and lots of hunting around, best of luck and would love to hear how you go!

Hi there,

Here are some photos of Tourmaline specimens that I collected from the pegmatite on the Dudley Peninsula about 15 years ago. These were collected over 4 separate trips, and are not easy to find (as are most good specimens!). I'm not sure on the current status of access to the old diggings, but I'm sure if you go to the local council in Penneshaw, they should be able to put you in touch with the landholder.
Cheers, Patrick

Ask a "Silly" Question / Re: how to pump water out of a shaft
« on: April 18, 2012, 11:32:24 AM »
A submersible pump would be the best option, these can be quite expensive to buy and need a decent sized generator to run them, so the hiring option might be better....but still not cheap! You'd want to know that there is something really worth chasing down that hole to take this project on :-)

Fossicking Locations / Re: Amethyst from Canungra / Beechmont QLD?

Hi Paul, yes I think its definitely part of the same volcanics, I'll keep hunting around for more info, or hopefully someone here will shed some light on the spot.

Fossicking Locations / Amethyst from Canungra / Beechmont QLD?

Hi all,

Just wondering if there is anyone here that knows more about this location or has specimens from this deposit?
From what I understand, this is an old fossicking area in the hinterland Gold Coast that became inaccessible after the land was taken up as part of an Army reserve. I've never actually seen a specimen from this spot or heard much about the quality of the crystals that were found. According to an old article in an Australian Lapidary magazine, the area produced double terminated Amethyst crystals from decomposed basalt.

Is there anyone here who's been digging there in the past or can shed a little more light on these "lost" amethyst crystals?

There is also an occurance of Ametrine here in Australia at Ewingar Creek in Northern NSW. Over the years I've picked up a few waterworn pieces in the creek that show distinct colour zoning. These pieces would have originated from large smoky quartz crystals with an outer layer of gemmy citirine that have gone through a final stage of growth resulting in Amethyst "scepter" terminations on them. I've included a couple of photos of a 7cm long waterworn piece that I've since polished to throw a little more "light" into it. The citrine portion of the crystal is actually much more yellow in real, was a bit hard to capture with the camera :-)

Here's a few of the Kangaroo Island Tourmalines, approx size of the individual sections are about 12-15mm wide, and the thin needles are only about 10-18mm long. I collected these over several trips to the diggings, and I'm sure there could be more there, but as Woofa said, a lot of exploring and searching is needed!

There is also a location west of Alice Springs that produce opaque but well formed Green Tourmaline, I'll try to post some pics soon.

Hi John,

I don't know a lot about the Broken Hill immediate area, but I've collected some nice Quartz crystals from the Olary region, which is about 120 km west of Broken Hill. There are also many other minerals in the Olary district including Beryl, Tourmaline, Chiastolite, Fluorite and many more. If you would like any info on this area, please PM me.
