Fossicking Locations / Powelltown
« on: February 20, 2020, 10:23:24 PM »
Hi folks, we are heading from Newcastle NSW to the Great Ocean Rd in a few days, we will be going through Powelltown on the way home so if you have any tips on fossicking locations that are accessible I'd appreciate it. We are towing a van so can't go down tracks etc. This will sadly just be for a few hours on one day as we are strapped for time. Cheers :)

Thanks Gemster, we were back  toward Wellingrove Rd. Just interested to see what it was. Never have that result with the yellow stuff haha.

Tips and Gadgets / Tin or silver along Strathbogie Rd?
« on: August 27, 2019, 07:40:26 PM »
Hey diggers! We did some fossicking on a place along Strathbogie Rd, Glen Innes the other week. I picked up a couple of little blueys and took a bucket of wash home to clean up. Interesting thing was that in the bottom of the pan in the sediment was a silver substance that would form a line once the pan tipped at an angle. Would this be tin? Maybe silver? Have done many a clean up in Southern Highlands area with mica and can say for sure it isn't that. This stuff seemed quite heavy. Just for interests sake... thoughts?

Tips and Gadgets / Re: can you clean rocks with Coca Cola ?

My hubby was soaking some quartz matrix in coke the other day. I lean toward baking soda and vinegar myself, I guess the outcome will tell the tale lol.

Cabbing and More / Resurfacing diamond resin wheels.

Hi guys, does anyone resurface their diamond resin wheels and if so, is it difficult? Seems that soft wheels just dont last as long these days.

Hi Maria, how did you go with the rock saw? I am actually looking to buy something similar.
Thanks, Missy.

Fossicking Locations / Re: Fossicking from Coffs to Byron
« on: August 03, 2018, 08:44:18 PM »
We recently went for a drive up there and there was nothing much in the creeks, I was hoping for jasper or quartz. I guess it may depend where you go as its a big area. Had a nice time up the coast. Found some agate..yay! Also the beaches above Coffs were full of jasper and quartz so that was a bonus. I have taken photos of my treasures lol.

Thanks MrSydney, figured as much but worth an ask. We are sticking to the coast road this time but once we get up to Byron, I'm hoping we can head in the direction of Mt Warning. Of course this hinges on the non-fossicking half being willing lol. We live only an hour from Gloucester and have had a look around up there.

Hi ALFers hubby and I are going to hook up the van on Friday and head up the NSW North coast from Newcastle. I'd be grateful for any fossicking info between Coffs and Byron. Any type of rocks, I'm not fussy haha.

General Discussion / Melbourne Rock Shops?
« on: March 15, 2018, 09:14:33 AM »
Hi Folks, I am heading to Melbourne CBD for a few days and was wondering if there are any rock shops or the like in the city. I have looked online and apart from a couple of crystal/metaphysical places, there doesn't seem to be any. We won't have a car and Mr Grumbles won't want to travel out of the city so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Fossicking Locations / Re: Nullamanna

I went to Frazers Creek where the concrete causeway is in November. Is this the area relating to the post? Dug around for ages with no result, went back to the car to get me specs and bugger me...a little blue fella right beside the wheel of the car!

Trip Talk / Re: Newcastle to Inverell Trip

Thanks for the info Mr Sydney. Not much of a gold person, probably because I suck at panning haha. Would be more into the small crystals at hanging rock and if you have a location of interest in Uralla I would appreciate it as our time is unfortunately limited to one day at each location. My man in Inverell is a seasoned rock kicker so I think he has the goods on where to go. Mainly again, looking at quartz crystals but if a pretty blue stone were to fall in my lap...well I would be pretty happy! Will give you guys the update upon my return...if hubby and I survive a week in the caravan together ;)

Trip Talk / Newcastle to Inverell Trip

Hi all, I'm heading to catch up with a mate in Inverell next week and thought I may get some tips from you folks. Thus far we are going to Nundle, Walcha, Uralla, Guyra and across to Inverell via Tingha. The home run is from there to Mann River Caravan Park on the Gwydir Hwy, Grafton, Nambucca and back home. I have done a little research so I know there are various things that can be found at Nundle. Any tips on the other towns would be great. My mate is taking me crystal hunting once I hit Inverell so cross fingers for me. Cheers, Mel
