Fossicking Locations / Re: Areas now Closed in Nth NSW..
« on: October 16, 2020, 06:30:33 AM »
Fully aware of legalities re fossicking on private land etc.N.Ps etc However the restrictions are getting so tight that any public fossicking will soon become impossible.Just have to look at the problems Minerama /Inverell Gemfest have  finding nejw fossicking areas.

Was only in Stannifer a couple of weeks ago.Got a few nice crystals and plenty of jellies.Tingha Cpk will probably dissappear.Owner said he wasnt taking out anybody onto private land anymore.Etc.These areas totally stuffed by tin mining in the past, are fossickers doing that much more damage ? Many parts of Tingha and Stannifer badly damaged by last years fires.Car wrecking yard a burnt out polluting eyesore. Now Torrington closing areas as well.Has there been official notification from NP.?

Well ,  Liz and myself have been going to M for nearly 15 years.Plus over the years have gone out with JP .Organized around  7 couples to go this year, none had ever been fossicking before.Plus  met up  with another 4 couples we knew  .All booked accommodation In GI before Xmas. Then spent money in Services club (18 for dinner),fuel ,odds and ends at the showgrounds, coffee shops etc. The bad news was none of us could get on a sapphire  field trip.!! By the time they published the trips  it was basically too late.I had to then take them out to Billabong Blue one day  ,enough said about the day there the better.!!!
There were others in our caravan park who also had come long distances only to find no trips available.I think  website pre booking will cause  a lot of problems unless  spots are left for  non bookers. Considering we had booked our accommodation months before trips  listed.Sent an email re these concerns to the info centre. Just have to book earlier was the reply. :(

Talking to the guys at Inverell club last year after their Gemfest. They said new  areas are nearly impossible to find for the field trips. Same old , fossicked  out areas are not good for getting and retaining new people into fossicking or getting the guys like ourselves to return.

LT I agree with your comments on Glen Elgen. Very slim pickings from a creek that from my  experience  should have been a cracker. Especially when the owner told us it had  seen very little if any fossicking .May be MR Sydney let the cat out of the bag by saying  the owner had seeded the creek previously. !!However that's Minerama its not all about the finds, but its meeting  interesting people, old friends etc.Nice of you to take the Canadian couple with you in your trusty truck..Had they fossicked before.?

MrSydney,Agree with your comments on this location. With the  amount of boulders,  ,ledges etc more stones should have been found. Most were small chips etc ,if that. The owner  walked up and down the bank like a spruiker, holding his bag of previously found  goodies.!!

Remember The Men@ Glen had their Friday and Saturday get together at the showgrounds...Around 200 of them, plus lots  cars and motorbikes. There should be  very little smell at all coming from the portaloos if right chemicals are used. It would be pretty easy to work out if the showgrounds would be a cost effective proposition. At the moment the traders are taking up half the oval. When it gets over three quarters full , I think time to look ahead. The plus I see at the moment is less cost overall, plus  visitors have a look and then have a walk downtown for a coffee etc.

So MrSydney you were the lucky one who went over the wall and snared one  .Myself and Lord Thunda shifted yards of gravel and rocks (I presume at the same site)!! for very little reward. In fact LT shifted so much I thought he was on a mission to China. The SES girls  sat on the rocks waiting to use their medical kits.!!

A big thank you to the couple of property owners who opened  up new sites for the fossickers. I didn't personally have much luck over the three days but still enjoyed it. My wife and I have been coming for 10 years and clearly a lot of happy people around. Our friends had a stall/display inside the RSL and said  the sales the best ever. Bit worried about the SES  with medical gear  on each trip, are we fossickers getting older.!!!Big thanks to them also. .Stayed at the showgrounds. The only complaint  was loos not in the best condition.  Once again thanks to the organising committee and others who made it happen.

Trip Talk / views on 2013 Minerama.
« on: March 12, 2013, 11:58:19 AM »
Well another year gone. After 7 years going to Minerama,I hate to say it but  there seemed to be less people  than last year, especially on trips etc.Maybe the weather played a part, but my view is that its imperative that new spots are found for field trips, obviously easier said than done.Visiting the same old spots year after year , will slowly be the death knell of this event.Surely there must be more property owners who would get involved Many times these things have been discussed on this forum, from price of trips, first aid requirements, insurance etc in saying this I take my hat off to the volunteer organisers, trip leaders etc for doing a great job.Myself and my wife love going up to Minerama however we were the only ones from our club who attended ,
