General Discussion / Re: First specimen
« on: March 24, 2018, 11:53:41 AM »
My first specimen my dad gave to me when I was 5years old, some 50 plus years ago. He worked as a hand on a nearby property up at Kerrs Creek in western NSW. It was the size of a baseball and clear as a bell, don't remember what it was called, but it was the best present my dad ever gave me. Maybe someone can enlighten me to what the stone was, I have no idea what happened to it though. And then 5 years ago my eldest son returned from Billabong Blue with a bucket of gravel, for Mother's Day, in there was a 2.7ct 2 colour sapphire, it's now cut and ready for jewellery.

I think we will go and look see out at Grawin while we are out that way, it's all very different to where we normally fossick, (Oberon) go to the baths, do the car door tours and try our luck at the pile outside the info centre. As for Inverell, we will Definately see the museum and go see Shaun, and fossick at Billabong Blue. Depending on time, Grawin might be on the to do list also. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Thanks Harryopal, I will certainly look into the opal shops if we don't do any good, have to come away with something from the Ridge!!!

Sorry to hear Tingha Sands are closing. Thanks for letting me know Lord_Thunda. I do have a USB somewhere that you loaded all your info onto. But in moving house, it's in a box, one of the many boxes in the box room!!! No matter, we may try Stannifer and Wellingrove???

Thanks bak, it does get rather hot out there, and we will look at the chamber of the black hand, I know the last time we were out there, some 20years ago, that same mound was there at the info centre and we found a black opal and a white opal, very small though. It's a place that seems to call you back time and time again.

Hiya All,
Hubby and I are doing a round trip for 2 weeks, as the heading suggests. We would love some hints as to where we could hopefully find some opals in and around Lightning Ridge, we are there for 3 nights, even who to speak too. We're not after anything spectacular, just a small piece or two for jewellery. Then to Inverell as our base for 4 nights, Tingha Sands, Stannifer, Billabong Blue are some of the places we wish to visit, would there be any other places while we are here?? Next we are at Deepwater, parking ourselves behind the pub, for 2 nights. Heading into Torrington from here, and hoping to find some gems there, any suggestions where to head while in there?? After all the fossicking we are heading to Port Macquarie to do some long awaited fishing, just to change the pace, before heading back to the rat race.

Thanks MrSydney and Baldy,
Firstly we tried Native Dog Creek, no good, has been worked over too much. Went back to Black Springs, we had a shorter day, so less finds. But we came back with one nice clear light blue dog tooth and a smallish sapphire. Next to no water and a lot of hard physical digging. We are paying for it now. Clear clean fresh air for the day then back home to the southern suburbs of Sydney. We will wait now for warmer weather to head back there. Thanks again for your suggestions. ;)

Trip Talk / West to Oberon
« on: April 27, 2017, 06:55:41 PM »
We are heading out to Oberon early tomorrow morning, for the day. I am hoping someone could suggest a creek spot reasonably easy to get to (due to the short day trip and no 4x4) we have been out to Black Springs (Vulcan Forest) twice, it was a physically demanding spot, head to toe in mud, but produced.  ;D ;D ;D

Fossicking Locations / Re: Emmaville Emerald Mine

Yes I saw it, but it's a shame it wasn't open when we were up there a couple of weeks ago, just before all the rain. Oh well, next time! We had an absolute blast anyway, and came back with a nice little collection of sapphires, we think either clear topaz or zircon, blue topaz, quart crystals and Jellybeans. We especially liked the Torrington area, but we camped at BB for 3 days and Tingha Caravan park for 2 days which were also great fun.
We are now organising a day trip up to Oberon again, we may try a different spot to last time, but not sure where?
 ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thank you for the info. It's on the definite list of another thing to do. Cannot wait to visit the area and the museum. Hope the weather will be kind to us camping out, haven't done it in a long time. :-\

Nice to hear you did alright up there, we are hoping for the same. My son and I are venturing up that ways, on Tuesday. Firstly staying in Tamworth. Then onto  Tingha for 2 nights, going to Tingha Sands and Stannifer. Next 3 nights at B.B. Then onto Deepwater, via Emmaville, to fossick out at Torrington area. We are really keen fossickers, but respectful, so look out!!!

Will Definately keep eyes peeled, don't want to end up down a mine shaft. And we will be staying at the CP in Tingha, so good to know the country folk are willing to help us newbie fossickers.
Thanks for the tips Gemster!!!
