Gemstone Faceting / Re: Emerald step cut problems
« on: September 08, 2020, 12:03:53 PM »
A cardinal rule that you must never forget.
Every time you change the angle OR the index you MUST lower the master lap (on the VJ) and then after changing angle or index you raise the master lap again until it just touches the stone and then start cutting. For machines with a mast you must always raise the mast , make your changes and then lower the mast until the stone touches the lap .
Good luck - you'll learn to love the VJ

Good of members to take the query as legit. and respond with good advice but I agree with Fullerton that there is a whiff of a popular sport of Phishing there

One of these machines was donated to the Newcastle Lapidary Club some years ago. It seemed that there had been problems with the circuit board that controlled the machine's operation as there were notes about repairs that had been made to it.
We decided to replace the motor with a 12v DC motor  and a speed controller from Motion Dynamics and a transformer from the internet .Total cost less than $150. These items fitted neatly under the base.  Our Club has 2 Gemmastas and a Hall Extra but the Topaz Tec is the most favored by students.
I have cut some stones on it myself and I agree it is a well designed machine and a pleasure to use. A pity production of them ceased.

I'm half way through cutting the crown on Bob Keller's Cleopatra's Eye - have had a problem because it was a large piece of CZ and there has been  a slight mis=alignment in the transfer so I am having to make adjustments on the fly .
Your version looks as if it will simplify the cutting so will try yours when I can get my hands on another large piece of CZ . After all a pattern like this really screams for a knocker of a stone !

Does your Lapidary Club have any machines ? Most likely they may have Gemmasta or Hall machines. Ask senior Club members what they have themselves and are they happy with them.
A well cared for Hall or Gemmasta machine is a good starting point as there have been plenty made and they've been made in Australia so there is a lot of local knowledge about the use and maintenance of them.

Frank ,
I have often had a problem with fine scratchies  on harder stones
when polishing - didn't seem to matter which lap I used .
Will certainly try your stationery lap method.

I've always used a Battlap with 3000 diamond as a prepolish. Wipe any slurry off it frequently and always keep it with the slightest amount of oil on it. Your cosmetic cleaning pad will be ideal.
I find using a few specks of diamond powder better than other diamond preparations.

Dihusky ,
I know exactly what you mean as my 86 year old body has difficulty seeing the facets , particularly at lower cutting angles - the stone is way up in the air !!
I have mounted the VJ on a lower than usual bench and use a draughtsman's chair with a long range of movement , so that at some angles I have the seat as low as possible and at the high viewing ranges I raise the chair as high as possible and rest my feet on the chair's footrest.
When cutting the table I view it by turning the index wheel 180 degrees and lower the quill - don't forget to go back to the original index setting before proceeding. I used to stand when cutting the table but find changing the index is easier !!
Other suggestions from VJ users always welcome.

Andrew ,
The book is most interesting - good to see some original thinking in design to maximise the beauty of faceted stones. Trouble is I don't know which pattern to try first !!!

Gemstone Faceting / Re: Nanosital polishing

Nanosital polishes quickly and well with a thin , just moist film of Cerium Oxide on a Matrix lap . Similar method to what has been used with Linde A on a tin lap for stones with a greater hardness than quartz.

Laurie Hall died last year . age 93 , but for some years the Hall - Xtra machine has been made and sold by Peter ( have forgoten his surname) in Cairns. His business name is Unamit ( pronounced You Name It). Phone  07 4053 1474.
Friends of mine have one of these machines and have always found him helpful.

That's a device made by Laurie Hall to preform oval stones and marquise - it had to be used with a set of tables that were supplied - I think in Laurie's handwriting . One for the museum

Gemstone Faceting / Re: Dominatrix Lap

Thanks Leah ,
Next opportunity I'll clean it off and try again with very little polish although the previous comment suggests it needs loading similar to a Batt.
My matrix lap is brilliant with Cerium on Quartz - hope I can get the same success with the Dominatrix on harder stones.

Same story with me . Have tried oily and water based diamond (100,000) and get scratches. I also did not do any pre-prep. Any help will be appreciated
