Hi all!

Looking to buy some zircon rough for faceting. I know the stuff not fussed on origin (harts range/Central QLD/N.NSW). I while ago I got my hands on some from Inverell area but haven't seen any from there pop up since. Looking for 5ct+ but happy to see what you have (interested in a lot or a little - whatever you have).

I have for sale a parcel of sapphire facet rough (from Sapphire). I am selling because I am heading to Japan for a holiday and would like some spending money. I will accept offers on the parcel as a whole or individual stones. The stones are as follows:
20.44, 8.14, 5.04, 3.4, 3.1ct.
All of the stones are untreated and unheated. I also have some zircon and other various things I would be willing to part with. I am open to offers so don't hesitate to PM me.

Cabbing and More / Re: First cabbing setup advice.

Hi Makky,
I had though about it but wasn't too sure on the details. I might look into it a bit more. Thanks!

I like the look of your setup. I'd be definitely leaning towards 6 wheels.

Hi Gemhunter,
I like the look of the 6"x4 and 6"x6 units in the first link. I have checked the store here before.
The only thing with the combo units is that they only have 2 wheels, But then again they have a saw.
Tough decision.
I've only ever used the diamond wheels, they seem to last forever. I think I'd stick with them.

Cabbing and More / First cabbing setup advice.

Hi everyone,
I've been cabbing for a while in various clubs but now have moved and am pretty far from any. I'm looking to start my own cabbing setup.
Looking to have a 4 or 6 wheel setup with a saw separate or in a combo machine. I'll be mainly using it for various agates, woods, jaspers etc. I also have tried my hand at opal, so it would be nice to be able to accommodate that.
I'm looking for advice on where to look, what I should be looking at including in terms of wheels etc. Just generally any advice you have on setting up.
Also, quick question about opal polish, tin oxide or cerium?  I mostly see people use cerium oxide, any particular reason for this?
Thanks in advance.

Fossicking Locations / Re: Newly developed site for fossicking locations

Wouldn't it be amazing if people could uploaded or geo-tag photos of their finds at a location, so when you are browsing this site for information you have a reference of the mineral/gem found there. It could be a sort of online brag board linked to the locations on the website.
Although I imagine that would take a bit of coding, not really anything I have a clue about ???

Hi everyone,
I am chasing a piece or two of Australian Jade for a small project. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

They included a table with the chemical breakdown in the article and from the images, they looked to be a ruby (clear sex sided crystal) etc. It did mention that garnet was known as 'australian ruby' but went on to mention this was the first real ruby deposit known in Aus. I will try to find more info online and link it.

Fossicking Locations / Harts Range Ruby
« on: January 27, 2015, 09:17:42 AM »
I am reading the November-December issue of "the Mineralogical Record" of 1980 and stumbled upon an article about the first known deposit of ruby in Australia. From reading the article I take it that the ruby deposit in the Harts Ranges have been commercially mined, but I just want to know if anyone has any more info on this.
Are there any little known deposits or areas that the rare ruby can be found? Has anyone ever found one or owns one from this area?

The article says the deposit is 250km by road from Alice Springs, 6km Se from Mt Brady at 23 05'S, 135 02'E.

Fossicking Locations / Re: Fossicking sites near Mackay?

So I made it out to Cape Hillsborough. I timed it wrong though, one of the larger tides of the year being at around lunch time which cut off access to most of the areas of interest. I still managed to walk along the high tide line as far as I could to Beachcombers Bay (couldn't quite make it there) and spotted a few pieces of interest.
The images are too big to attach, I might have some luck with an album.

Hi Nssian,
Just from the pictures, it looks very similar to some stuff on the ground in one of the sapphire fields in central QLD that I visit. It looks like it could be jasper but if anyone can confirm this for sure I would also like to know.

Yeah, it's a shame there is limited fossicking up there. If I can't take specimens I might as well take photos, the next best thing!

I'll be sure to upload an album when I visit.

There seems to be stuff to be found everwhere, the access is the issue  :-\
