Gemstone Faceting / Re: Help--wrong diamond in tin lap
« on: November 01, 2015, 03:03:04 PM »
I have a 20mm thick 6" aluminium disk with a 10mm thread in the centre and give the face a light skin each time I set it up in the chuck. I then have a bush made up with a 1/2" step on one end and 3/4" the other and a 10mm hole in the guts for a bolt. I then clamp the lap to the disk with the 10mm bolt and bush and machine the lap, after machining depending on the lap I may put the lap in the chuck and machine the centre boss down lower then the lap surface

I am glad I am not the only person who has done the same  ;)
I am in the fortunate position to be able to go out to my shed and skim the lap in my lathe, but the diamond will give a carbide tool what for until the layer is gone. once I have the layer taken off I finish with tool steel and a good size radius on the tool for a good finish and no scoring the lap before I use it just a clean with a Scotch bright pad and running water

Oh, wondered myself what is was for. Have got my Robilt running well now changed the sewing machine motor and mounted a CNC DC motor and controller with a custom made drive pulley.

Some good ideas in here, I have just been given some fire opal from WA to see how it would come up and my first test run I found I was having the edges "pop" and chip but I was trying to grind it like a piece of CZ  :o

Found out today the bit of "CZ" I was using is actually corundum and was getting some orange peel on a couple of the facets using a copper lap with 8000 diamond. Swapped over to a zinc lap with 14000 diamond and it came up a treat ready for polishing

Have ended up replacing the dop holder as well as I felt the dops had too much play in the holder.
Have now got it all set up and have started a standard 8 sided brilliant on a bit of purple CZ. All the repairs have made a difference to the machine now the point on the pavilion all meet  :)
So now the fun and learning begins

These photos were taken while the machine was still in my Dads shed before he passed away and he had it set up without the master under it. I now have it set up at home and run a old lap the thin diamond lap.
I am slowly going through and cleaning up the old laps and replacing a few, just got a new zinc lap from Aussie Sapphire to try

Hi All
Have got my Dad's old Robilt machine and have started to give faceting a crack, I am chasing any info people may have on these old machines so I can bring it back to original tolerance. I have spoken to John at Robilt but having trouble getting back info and contact with John.
Any info would be appreciated

Regards Bruce
