Tips, Gadgets & Brag Board. / purple chalcedony
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:32:18 PM »
Hello everyone I just cut this piece of chalcedony and I am amazed. I just had to share it with everyone. My friend kyle and I went for a walk on a ridge line near Tyalgum and this is the only thing I found on our 6 hr walk I chose to keep and I'm glad I did. We climbed water falls and scaled cliffs to get to the top. But I found this rock in the paddock on the way up. It was laying where the cows had been trampling regularly, it was in a mud slosh pit basically mixed with a bit of cow dung for good measure. It looked a little red in the sun when I held it up so I kept it. Stunk like cow behinds when I washed it..... Then washed I held it up to the sun and I got a little purple through it. So I cut it to find out. Sure enough it was purple. So anyone I just wanted to ask if it could be anything other then chalcedony like amethysts or flourite? In my opinion its chalcedony from the look of the outside of the rock and from what I know about chalcedony.

Trip Talk / pegmatites digging advice
« on: May 23, 2015, 08:43:11 AM »
Hello everyone I have another question for anyone that wants to give me a bit of advice on how to go about digging a pegmatite. How should I attack a peg, should I smash out the quartz core and feldspar? Or dig around it? Does every peg have a pocket of crystals and if not how would I know? I have found pegs I'm just not sure what I should do next any help would be great.

Trip Talk / Ewingar smoky quartz trip advice and tips
« on: March 30, 2015, 11:28:41 AM »
Hello all this will be my first post on the site. I have some questions for evryone about Ewingar state forest. My gf, mate and I have a trip planed for this easter long weekend to dig for smoky quartz. We are a little green when it comes to knowing where to start digging and what to look for when picking the location to begin. As we are still young rock hounds and have little experience. So any and all tips or advice to help on our trip would be very useful to us. I have read the other posts on Ewingar from a few years ago but they didn't seem to give me the info that I was really looking for so i restarted the topic for further discussion. Thank you.
Cheers cams7 :)
