General Discussion / Sapphire Mining Meeting
« on: September 06, 2013, 05:56:13 PM »
Can anyone from Sapphire/Rubyvale fill me in on what the meeting was for at Sapphire yesterday. I didn't realize it was on and was too late to attend.  By the huge number of cars present and the three police officers on hand, it looked like it was important.

Any info would be appreciated.

ps. I am a member of the Sapphire Producers Assoc but don't receive any news from them.

Trip Talk / Harts Range Camping
« on: May 23, 2013, 07:49:20 AM »
Hi All

Heading off to Harts Range next week. I'm after info on camping there. Talking to a stall holder in Sapphire 2 weeks ago, I was told that you shouldn't drink the water at Gemtree, not even for cooking. For those that have stayed there before what do you reckon? Also believe you are not allowed to use generators. We have a fridge in the car and usually run the generator for awhile at night to charge the car batteries. Already been caught out with two flat batteries at Fullerton River before and don't want a repeat!

Camping on the fields, is it safe to leave your camp and go fossicking in other areas? Not sure how far apart the various diggings are.

We prefer to camp out bush but are still deciding on this one. Even camping fees add up for three adults over two weeks.

Grateful for any feedback :)

Show off your Gems / Mt Surprise Topaz - Spider Cut
« on: April 06, 2013, 12:16:03 AM »
This is my son's latest cut. He says it's not perfect but is happy with it as it is the first he has done like it. There are around 180 facets mainly on the underside. I think it's awesome :D

Fossicking Locations / Harts Range and pets

We are planning on heading out to Harts Range for the first time at the end of May and was wondering if anyone can tell me if dogs are allowed. We have one dog and prefer to camp out bush but only if allowed.

Gemstone Faceting / Identification?
« on: November 18, 2012, 10:29:54 AM »
Mr T has been given two stones to cut for a customer but we are not sure what they are. Customer said he found them near Argyle.

Light blue stone weighs 33ct and is 17mm wide, 21mm long and 12mm high.

Green stone weighs 60ct and looks like peridot.

I couldn't add pictures here so have added them to media gallery.

Mr T would like input to what anyone thinks they might be before he starts trying to cut them. Thanks Sioux

General Discussion / Anakie Gemfest
« on: August 05, 2012, 07:04:42 PM »
Can't believe that admission to this years gemfest at Anakie is $10 per day with no 4 day pass available. Apparently no pensioner discount either. ??? (I'm not a pensioner myself) I usually go most days of the 4 day event but at $10/day that won't be happening this year. :(

Gemstone Faceting / Tite-On is back
« on: July 26, 2012, 04:25:33 PM »
I have put this under another post but thought I would make a new one.

I was in Rubyvale/Sapphire this morning and Tite On is back. I bought some from M&M's. Although he said he doesn't have much, he will be getting a regular supply again. Skippy's Gems had some but had sold out. Cut and Slice had a sign on his door saying he had it also.

Gemstone Faceting / Ametrine
« on: March 05, 2012, 01:47:57 PM »
Hi All

Can anyone tell me, if ametrine is amethyst and citrine, what if you cut a stone that is from one end only. So if you cut a purple stone out of it, is it then an amethyst or still ametrine. ??? ???

Tips, Gadgets & Brag Board. / ? Rock
« on: February 14, 2012, 06:10:58 PM »
Can anyone tell me what this rock is. A bloke brought it around the other day and asked if we knew what it was. We don't. He said his dad got it from Birdsville about 40 years ago. They tried grinding a bit of it and it was very hard. Where they did grind it, it is a uniform real dark chocolate colour. Any ideas?

Jewellery Talk / Notching
« on: December 08, 2011, 01:49:52 PM »
Mr T (son, thanks for the nickname Deb) is setting some of his cut stones. He now realizes that he needs to notch some findings. We had never heard of notching before. Can anyone advise on ways to do this. Someone said a dremel is good. Thanks

General Discussion / Storeholder at Anakie Gemfest
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:36:05 AM »
For anyone that attended the Anakie Gemfest this year. Does anyone know the name/contact of the store holders that sold cheap jewelery display things. I noticed them give a customer a card with their web site. They were situated to the right of the entertainment stage (that's if you were facing front on to the stage).
