Fossicking Locations / Fossicking from Coffs to Byron
« on: July 16, 2018, 08:17:26 PM »
Hi ALFers hubby and I are going to hook up the van on Friday and head up the NSW North coast from Newcastle. I'd be grateful for any fossicking info between Coffs and Byron. Any type of rocks, I'm not fussy haha.
Cheers,
Melissa

General Discussion / Melbourne Rock Shops?
« on: March 15, 2018, 09:14:33 AM »
Hi Folks, I am heading to Melbourne CBD for a few days and was wondering if there are any rock shops or the like in the city. I have looked online and apart from a couple of crystal/metaphysical places, there doesn't seem to be any. We won't have a car and Mr Grumbles won't want to travel out of the city so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Trip Talk / Newcastle to Inverell Trip
« on: November 09, 2017, 07:54:10 AM »
Hi all, I'm heading to catch up with a mate in Inverell next week and thought I may get some tips from you folks. Thus far we are going to Nundle, Walcha, Uralla, Guyra and across to Inverell via Tingha. The home run is from there to Mann River Caravan Park on the Gwydir Hwy, Grafton, Nambucca and back home. I have done a little research so I know there are various things that can be found at Nundle. Any tips on the other towns would be great. My mate is taking me crystal hunting once I hit Inverell so cross fingers for me. Cheers, Mel

General Discussion / Fossicking tips for Cairns/Trinity Beach area.
« on: September 21, 2016, 12:25:07 AM »
Hi Folks, I'm heading to Trinity Beach just north of Cairns in a few weeks. Just wondering if anyone knows some fossicking locations nearby that are worth a try. Ideally not more than half hour drive. Also if you know of any worthwhile sightseeing that isn't suggested on visitor info sites. Thanks in advance :)

General Discussion / Dapto thread?
« on: September 06, 2016, 08:00:27 PM »
Hi folks, could be a figment of my imagination (which is still riding the Monday roundabout) but I thought there was recently a thread regarding Dapto and the Princes Highway on here? Have searched the forums but couldn't find anything. Things are a little wet around home so I thought I might venture toward the coast to do some rock kicking.

Jewellery Talk / Sticky situation - removing a bell cap
« on: June 26, 2016, 04:46:55 AM »
Hi folks, I have made a few pendants in the past and use epoxy glue to secure the bell cap. I need to remove one as it must have slipped off centre whilst drying. What do most people use to dissolve the glue?

Trip Talk / Townsville fossicking tips please.
« on: May 10, 2016, 03:46:32 AM »
Hey folks, I'm headed up to Townsville on Saturday for five days to see my daughter who is at Uni up there and also take my mum for a little break before she has a breast removed. I was hoping there might be some places close to town where I can have a scratch around. I am not taking any real gear just pretty much picking up off the ground. If there are any locals who can give me some tips for locations within say 30 mins, it would be appreciated. Thanks M :)

General Discussion / Am I digging deep enough?
« on: April 13, 2016, 06:17:28 AM »
Hi folks, I go fossicking at a creek only 20 minutes away from home (Grabben Gullen) so you might say I go there often. I'm still a novice but over the last year I have been lucky enough to get a few nice zircons, quite a bit of very small green sapphire, and a few blues although barely cuttable. I moved upstream from my normal area and found an old rotting log a few metres from the creek on the bank. Easter holidays meant that a lot of areas had been disturbed but I got to thinking that as this had been obviously left alone and undisturbed for probably years that it would be hiding some hope. I ended up getting some nice clear crystal (rutilated quartz, smoky quartz etc) and sapphire bombs but not one bit of green or decent blue, and no spinel (which is very unusual for this creek). I have MS so can't do too much back breaking digging but went down about a foot.
So my question is...do you guys think that I have not gone down far enough to hit the better stuff? There really wasn't any smooth rock amongst the clean up (again unusual). I must say the pieces I did get were good and clear and probably larger than I normally get (I make jewellery out of the good stuff). Now I know that every place is different and it's hard to gauge if you haven't been there but opinions would be appreciated. Thanks, Melissa :)

General Discussion / New shows on Foxtel
« on: February 03, 2016, 08:29:38 AM »
Hi Diggers, there have been a couple of new shows on Foxtel (if you have it) that you may wish to know about. There is one called Jade Fever which is about a family mining and selling jade, not too bad quality but unfortunately the season is finished, I only found it half way through. No doubt there will be replays lol. The other is called Game of Stones and is about 'extreme' gem hunters, it's over dramatized reality tv however it was interesting to look at the gems, locations etc. Just thought I would put it out there :)

Gemstone Discussions / How to test if opalite is real or resin?
« on: January 16, 2016, 10:42:11 AM »
Hi folks, I bought a stone from a market stall purported to be opalite. I showed a gem club member who believes it is fake and made from resin. That may well be the case however I bought a number of stones from this stall and the others are all fairdinkum. Is there a method I can use to test this piece?

General Discussion / Picked up some treasures in NZ
« on: November 26, 2015, 08:43:16 AM »
I just went on a cruise to New Zealand and brought back some pieces of jade and paua shell. I found a shop in Akaroa where you could fill a small plastic bag with assorted stones for $5. What's a girl to do? Of course I filled two lol. Have no idea what half the stones are but there was quartz, agate, amazonite, rhodonite etc. All polished reasonably well so I should be able to make some nice little jewellery pieces. I know it probably isn't fantastic quality but I don't plan to sell what I make, just gift it to family and friends.

Jewellery Talk / Adhesive for jewellery?
« on: November 26, 2015, 08:33:08 AM »
Just a quick question about what adhesive to use when making pendants on bezel plates. Do you just use superglue type product or an epoxy? The bezels are only small so I don't want the glue showing. Thanks :)

Gemstone Faceting / Polishing quartz - what do you use?
« on: October 13, 2015, 03:05:12 AM »
Using a dremel I have cut some nice pieces for pendants, I have shaped them and used a 2000 grit paper to smooth them. My dremel came with polishing compound...will that do the trick or is there something else I need to use? This is my first go at cutting, cabbing etc apart from a couple of lessons at the local gem club, which is a bit far away for me to go every week.

General Discussion / Will my tumbler freeze?
« on: July 09, 2015, 07:47:53 AM »
I just got my first rock tumbler from Aussie Sapphire, dual barrel and even came with assorted rocks to start me off. I have a stack of quartzy stuff and gemstones that I would like to clean up. The book tells you that it's not meant for outside due to freezing but where I live, near Canberra, even the garage and our spare room are freezing. We had -10 here the other morning so I am concerned about starting the tumbler off, will it really freeze?

Trip Talk / Grabben Gullen Fun
« on: April 18, 2015, 02:25:51 PM »
Hi all, I'm a newbie to the fossicking scene, since I was a young kid I've been interested in rocks etc, but until recently hadn't had the time or opportunity to take it up as a hobby. I live not far from Grabben Gullen and have seen some interesting videos of fossicking there. I stumbled across this site while doing some research about the area and realised that some members have been down to the creek for a paddle. I went last week with pan and sieve in hand, totally clueless as to what I was doing or looking for (apart from what I had seen on the videos lol). Hubby was kind enough to dig around for me and as we didn't have a lot of time he put some gravel etc in a tub and brought it home for me. I have MS so I'm not able to handle a lot of heavy digging or anything so it worked out well for me as I've spent a few days out in the sun going through the stuff we got. I 'think' I have found some stones, certainly there seems to be quite a number of zircons and a few sapphires. I enjoyed it that much that all I can think about now is going back to try again! lol.  ;D
