Trip Talk / Bad News About Powelltown Area
« on: June 06, 2015, 03:56:52 PM »
Visiting Powelltown creeks for a bit of fossicking I was devastated by the environmental terrorism and downright bastardry of some scumbags who have dredged large sections. I reported it to the Land and Environment office at Powelly, but it came as no news to them. They told me it's been happening for quite a while and they're asking people for help  - they've even joined local police breath testing to ask people who look to be fossickers to keep their eyes open.. I found some hose today while walking along a pristine creek whose banks were sprayed with debris. I'll report the location when their office opens up after the long weekend. I'm going back for a better look to hopefully find some more of their gear. It makes you sick. I usually sign off with "cheers", but not this time.

Tips and Gadgets / Gemology Tools

While looking around for gem ID sources, I came across this computer software. It sounds nice in that you type in a range of IDs & then have the database help you settle any doubts. It also does plenty of other stuff.
I am not on commission!  :D

Trip Talk / Vic adventure imminent!
« on: April 22, 2013, 09:58:52 AM »
Hi all. Have just finished my planning for mid-May take off with the van & my fossicking mate. Stopping at Yass, fossicking Grabben Gullen & Wee Jasper. Beechworth next for fossicking around Albury & Eldorado. Ballarat for gold & maybe sapphires. Mortlake stay for the peridot hunt & also the western end of the GOR for Moonlight Beach gems & maybe fossils. Lorne next, mainly for fishing (trout & perch & saltwater fish, too). Yarra Junction for proximity to Powelltown. Sale for Stratford agates & gold in the surrounding area. Cann River, Batemans Bay & Wollongong for the homeward leg in late June.
If any of you, especially locals, know of any likely spots in my van path that would be worth a fossick, please let me know. Am really looking forward to this extended trip. Hoping to do much the same sort of thing next year, but following the Murray, taking my time again.
Cheers,
colza

Ask a "Silly" Question / How do I polish opal?
« on: March 17, 2013, 10:48:09 AM »
Have a jar of Ridge opals (from way back when I was a kid with sharp eyes). Many are chips & flakes, but some are bigger & worth polishing. How do I polish? I mean, what's the detail of the process & what equipment will I need to get - hopefully this equipment will be able to be used more widely, not just for the opal I want to polish.
Looking forward to your guidance.  beers
Cheers,

Trip Talk / Victorian adventure May/June 2013
« on: January 28, 2013, 07:21:31 AM »
Am doing about 6 weeks through the golden triangle staying at beechworth, bendigo, ballarat, using them as bases to explore & fossick surrounding areas each time. Also staying at lorne, looking along beaches (fishing!) & doing some fossicking. Going to mt shadwell as well. On the road home will stay at thomson's river out of sale, then bateman's bay.
If anyone knows of great spots for fossicking or fishing that are pretty much in my van path, please let me know. Am doing a lot of research myself, will report back on my trip late june.
Cheers,
colza
