Tips, Gadgets & Brag Board. / Metal Detector
« on: February 12, 2014, 06:54:58 AM »
Ok, I am looking for information as to the best, cheapest Metal Detector (second hand is ok) for going over both my properties and more than likely the Thanes area.  I will be looking for Alluvial gold (I am told).  I have had a bit of a look on ebay at the Minelab's & Garrets but have no idea which is what and then there are so many different coils etc.  What do I need for a basic set up that isn't going to take me 40years to get my money back? ($600 max)

Fossicking Locations / Goomburra
« on: January 25, 2014, 10:52:35 AM »
I have just received my new bible "How & where to find Gemstones" and have been looking around the Pratten area where we have a property and have found in the maps two locations for things other than gold.  Just wondering if anyone has been there?  The first one is Goomburra which mentions Sapphires & Zircons and the other one appears to be near Leslie Dam for Rhodonite?.  Pretty good old book it even shows the mine that was on our property (before hubby filled it in).   ::)

Gemstone Discussions / Sard?
« on: December 01, 2013, 09:05:31 AM »
Quick question, aside from the crystal formation, what is the difference between Sard & Smokey Quartz?  I have a few thunder egg clusters that I have cut that are full of clear sard.

General Discussion / Vote for Cedar Creek State School
« on: September 03, 2013, 03:30:52 AM »
Hi All,
Was wondering if I could get you guys to vote for my sons school "Cedar Creek State School".  It only takes a minute or two and you only have to vote five times (over 5 days).
It's for a $20,000. Staff room makeover and lord knows their school could really do with one!! They only have 240 kids so hence my need to post & plea with you guys/gals to vote.

Ask a "Silly" Question / Gold Nugget Purity
« on: August 25, 2013, 05:11:57 AM »
Okay, I have just bought 30 vials of 22-24ct gold flakes off e-bay and want to start gradually building up my collection.
My question is what would be the purity of the little nuggets that are for sale and how would I tell when I get them home?  I want to get a troy ounce together so as I can get it melted or bashed and then put it away for a rainy day.
I have sorted through all of my broken 9ct gold and have come up with 25grams of it so I am searching for more 9ct as well.
I am probably getting ripped off LOL

Thanks to  Brett H who did this for me and to the Jeweler who charged me the earth for the gold jump ring LOL, I can now take a little bit of home with me where-ever I go.

Tips and Gadgets / Microscope

Hi all,
I am thinking of getting a microscope to look at structures of crystals/stones etc.  What would be the best magnification? My eyes have had it LOL.

Trip Talk / Between Eulo & Lightning Ridge end of September
« on: July 19, 2013, 11:04:51 AM »
Hi All,
My In-laws are doing an 8 week trip in two weeks time heading out to Birdsville, they will be stopping in Eulo and Lightning Ridge at the end of September for a "Fossick" (they are definitely not fossickers, although my FIL tells me he can use a Gold Pan  ;) ).  So I was wondering if anyone could tell me of any areas around these locations to find gemstones apart from the obvious opals at Lightning Ridge.
Cheers Sharyn

Cabbing and More / How much for a Cab?
« on: July 12, 2013, 04:44:03 AM »
Hi Cabbers,
After seeing the stunning Cabs by both Jamo & Brett h from my material, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing 7 cabs for me with my material between now & xmas (for xmas prezzies)(can send as I slab, so as not all at once).  Nothing fancy just a nice cut with a hole so as I can put a jump ring on it and a bit of leather for wearing.  So if anyone is interested could you please tell me price/cab.
Cheers  beers

Whilst bashing a rock apart at the fracture line today I came across this..

which I managed to dig out with my fingernail, there is more of it on this rock in the mud of the fracture, which you can see in these pics.

Is it Gold? if so what do I do with it now?
Was about to slab the rock, but don't know whether I will now  ???

Ask a "Silly" Question / What does it all mean??
« on: June 27, 2013, 05:55:40 AM »
Okay, I am sitting here studying a Geological Survey "Deposits of Extractive Materials" of my area/creek and am getting more and more confused because it appears that we are covered by quite a few different areas.  If I tell you what is here can someone please tell me what I can expect to find here (apart from the Jasper and Sandstone and thundereggs).  And what's the difference between - Chert, Rhyolite and Jasper?  ??? ???

1. Basalt flows, minor rhyolite and pyroclastics.
2. Stream alluvium.
3. Siltstone, Conglomerate, Tuff, Sandstone, Shale, Coal seams.
4. Rhyolite flows and tuff
5. Greywacke, argillite, quartzite, chert, shale, sandstone, greenstone.

Cheers Sharyn

Ask a "Silly" Question / Naming Jasper?
« on: May 27, 2013, 07:09:30 AM »
Finally found a replacement for my "Rainforest Jasper" and I want to call it "Little Jem" for obvious reasons, can I do this or do I have to be technical?  How do I know if this stuff has already been named?
The rock I found is hugeish and is pretty much solid agate except for some purple druzy, there are no fractures and only some minor pitting but the different patterns with each cut are gorgeous.
Father-in-law hit it with the slasher, hence the offcut for me to slab  :)

(Jasonr it's the one you saw at the front of shed with the sparkling druzy)
