Cabbing and More / Carvers Please
« on: January 12, 2018, 03:20:43 PM »
Hi Everyone, (Leah please let me know if any issues with this post)

A few of you would have seen my intermittent posts mostly about faceting or rocks in general but been pretty quiet of late due to uni first and now work.

At the moment I am working in insurance for jewellery and valuables on the procuring side of things and we've had a couple of clients looking at replacing or purchasing gemstone carvings so I thought I would come to where I know there are carvers as we dont have anyone in our system currently who can do high quality carvings based in Aus (we only use Aus jewellers/suppliers).

If anyone has a business (well an ABN preferably) or knows of someone who is doing carvings professionally who might be able to help out that would be great, if you want to discuss this with me let me know and I will send you a private message with my contact details on it any general questions chuck on here

Hi everyone,

Its been ages since I've posted or been on here, I have been crazy busy with work and my thesis but not far off getting back into the swing of all things lapidary again so I thought I would pop in and say hi and see how everyone is going?

Gemstone Discussions / Bit of help pricing copper minerals cab
« on: September 13, 2015, 06:03:41 PM »
G'day everyone, so I could do with a bit of advice on pricing this copper minerals cab, its 86.19ct untreated Australian material (I'll be able to tell you from which mine when I go see the lecturer that gave it to me tomorrow) primarily cuprite and malachite however there are several different copper minerals in it including small flecks of native copper as inclusions within the cuprite. both sides are polished as its such a unique piece and has different visual properties on both sides. Attached below are a couple of photos, any other info needed just ask, cheers in advance, Blash

Ask a "Silly" Question / graves faceting machine doing something funny
« on: August 25, 2015, 08:56:18 PM »
Hey everyone, I apologise for posting a bit recently. Also I was just doing some cutting then for the 1st time in a few months and it was cutting fine and then I stopped it all to have dinner and when I came back and started it up its now running at maybe 1/3rd of the speed and sounds like something is slipping possibly? Its a graves mark 5xl if anyone has any ideas what it could be and how to fix it that would be great

Gemstone Faceting / thoughts on diamatrix?
« on: August 25, 2015, 05:19:13 PM »
Hey everyone so I'm looking at getting a diamatrix mostly to polish sapphires, but cash is a bit tight so I'm a bit reluctant to make the investment. Does anyone have one? If so how do you find it? do you think its worth the investment?

General Discussion / A bit early but oh well Merry Christmas
« on: December 16, 2014, 05:35:28 PM »
Thought I would get in early (mostly because I have it all set up at the moment for my Christmas party on thursday) and wish everyone a Merry Christmas by showing what happens when a geologist/gem cutter/jeweler has complete control over what goes on the Christmas tree Mwahahahahaha  ;D

Gemstone Discussions / lead glass filled sapphires
« on: December 16, 2014, 01:19:10 AM »
Hey everyone so quite a while ago before I got the hang of buying gem rough I got a parcel of sapphire rough from some bloke and the stones which Id been shown weren't what I received. In that parcel there was a blue-purple piece of rough which I instantly picked as being dodgy just cos so much of it looked and felt wrong (especially as it was supposedly untreated Australian rough) so I got one of my friends who is in the Adelaide branch of the GAA to check it out. After doing all the tests that they can do in the Adelaide office they determined it was a lead glass filled blue sapphire and apparently the 1st case which they have heard of it occurring. So yea just a bit of a heads up to everyone that there are now lead glass filled blue sapphires out there so just be a bit wary about the stones you get.

Gemstone Faceting / stubborn glue
« on: December 14, 2014, 03:59:35 PM »
hey everyone so ive been using the dextone glue recently and only on one occasion has it let go on me and i have a feeling my mixing ratio might have been a bit off, however this isnt what this post is about. so at the moment ive got an amethyst finished in a cone dop however the glue that is holding it is being incredibly stubborn and refusing to let go so far ive tried dissolving it in metho, heating it with a wet, cool paper towel on the stone, swearing at it, heating it without the paper towel out of frustration, hitting the dop against the desk hoping that it will loosen the glue a bit, putting it in the freezer for 10mins then attempting to remove it, putting it in the freezer for an hour and then attempting to remove it with the inclusion of again hitting the dop against a desk and then swearing at it some more and so far nothing has worked and the stone is somehow undamaged the only thing i can think of is to try putting the stone end in an ice cube tray with water and attempting to use ice wedging to get the bloody thing out

« on: August 03, 2014, 10:34:05 PM »
Hey everyone,

while this is quite like the joke of the day thread I think we need a thread dedicated to puns about rocks, gems, jewellery and geology.
Hope this is received well and everyone plays gneiss :P

Jewellery Talk / possible ruby ring dunno whether to get it tested
« on: July 20, 2014, 10:53:40 PM »
hey everyone so i saw my great aunt today and she asked me to clean one of her rings for her and when she got it out i started asking a few questions so apparently she got it in the late 1950s for 70 pounds its 9ct gold and with a red stone surrounded by smaller clear accent stones that appear to be topaz (i think). when viewed through the spectroscope it has 1 thin absorbance band in the red 2 thin bands around 475nm and a thick band between about 500 and 600nm which from what i have found seems to be consistent with ruby. i cant see any inclusions that indicate natural but nor do i see any bubbles or colour gradient that would indicate synthetic. i will be checking if it fluoresces, if it does what are the opinions of taking it into the gaa and getting them to check it out to see if it is natural?

here it is
