General Discussion / Broome earthquake
« on: July 15, 2019, 09:14:26 PM »
We are in the process of doing the “big trip”around Oz. Yesterday we pulled into the Woolies Servo in Broome and just as the hose was inserted into the car everything started shudder. We wondered what we had triggered!
The earth moved under our feet!

Fossicking Locations / Norseman fossicking site
« on: August 12, 2017, 09:23:15 PM »
Hi All,
Currently we are in Norseman WA. This post is just to let everyone know that the fossicking site for agates etc. that was accessed by paying a fee and getting a mud map at the Norseman Information Centre is NO longer available. According to the lady at the information centre it is the same old story - inappropriate useage, so the owner has closed the site down.
There is still a public fossicking area available about 11km from town but the material does not have the quality of the other site.
 :(
Happy fossicking.

Trip Talk / Caring for fossicking sites
« on: April 20, 2017, 08:14:11 PM »
Hi Forum Friends,
My husband and I spent Easter Sunday , Monday, and Tuesday at Kookabookra, travelling out from Guyra each day. The water was a little higher than when we have been there previously and on Tuesday it rose more than 20cms over the period of the day. By the afternoon my morning sieving pile was inundated, obviously from rain overnight further up in the catchment.
People camping in the area while we were there left their campsites in pristine condition. However, there was a campsite that had been vacated before we arrived which had drink bottles  left buried in the sand, crushed beer can, parts of food wrappers  scattered about and worst of all, a  toilet paper roll and used toilet paper decorating the grass and shrubs.
The environment is full of animal dung and nature can handle an extra human contribution, especially if a shovel is put to good use. Toilet paper is a different matter! Even if buried animals and erosion tend to uncover it and it flutters around for a long time. As a Grey Nomad I am deeply distressed by the number of beautiful areas of Australia that are festooned with toilet paper. Surely people can place it in a  plastic bag and burn it in their campfire or take it with them and place it in the garbage.
I took out a plastic supermarket bag of somebody else's rubbish to dispose of thoughtfully. By the way, we did find some beautiful quartz jelly beans and a little topaz.

General Discussion / Fossicking locations
« on: January 29, 2017, 08:22:08 PM »
Hi ALFers,
My husband and I are heading south to the Victorian coast.
We would like to have a fossick around the Avon River near Stratford and then have a look around Powelltown. Would any generous and knowledgeable forum members be willing to give us a heads-up particularly where to go, ie what creeks or rivers are good places to investigate especially around Powelltown. I have read every post i could find on the subject, but i am still a bit confused where to start. I am not asking for "secret"spots, but just some general how-to -get- there directions. THANKS in anticiation, Gerda
