For Sale, Swap or Wanted (Please Read Rules First) / Baz Crevicing Tool.
« on: December 12, 2019, 02:13:04 PM »
G'day guys and gals.

I've been prospecting and fossicking for a couple of years now and as a blacksmith and cutler, I've always wanted a better tool for scratching out those gravel-packed crevices to get to the heavies on the bottom.

I have my own grinder, anvil and forge at home in my shed, so at night I have been making crevicing tools that I have developed in the field and modified over time to get it just right.

I've started to sell them to make me a bit of pocket money, put petrol in the car and get me back out fossicking.

If anyone would like one, I made a quick shop online to make it easy to grab.

Mods, I hope this is OK with you. It helps out a little guy. If all goes well, I will be developing a range of prospectors/fossickers hand-tools in the future.

Cheers!

Baz.

Fossicking Locations / Wee Jasper
« on: September 05, 2019, 09:54:39 PM »
G'day gang!

After searching this forum for a long time, it seems that Wee Jasper has not been fossicked since around 2014.

Is it still OK to go there?

I have the NSW statewide permit, does this cover WJ?

How's the blackberry?

Any running water?

Has anyone here been there recently?

Cheers,

Baz.

Tell Us About Yourself / My Steel Iron Man suit this Sunday.
« on: March 29, 2019, 09:03:10 PM »
Convoy for Cancer Families is on this Sunday in Canberra. Trucks and Motorcycles drive the route, raising money for these families in need. The convoy ends at our showgrounds, where stalls, personalities and concerts are held for the rest of the afternoon. Iron Man included!

So, I'm flat chat tonight! Gearing up for Sunday at EPIC! 12 Noon until 3pm.

Checking the suit, making adjustments. Charging batteries and systems checks. Washing the stinky sweaty undersuit!

I've been on a crash diet for the last week and lost 3 kg. Every 100 grams I lose makes the suit more comfortable. Haircut done, to fit my rude lookin' melon into the helmet and shaving the man-beard off tonight. A new Baz for a few days.

New stickers thanks to my mate Ken!

Fossicking Locations / Grabben Gullen help please?
« on: February 21, 2019, 03:48:33 PM »
I've been to the bridge and panned around in the creek below and found nothing. Not even a spinel.

I'd like to go back and maybe walk the creek for a better spot, but I would really appreciate some help please.

Would anyone be so kind as to private message me a better place to look and sit quietly with a pan and garden trowel?

I just go to get away from the grind and the noise of people. Good for my mental health.

Many thanks,

Baz.

General Discussion / Snake Catching
« on: January 19, 2019, 08:26:45 PM »
It's weird you know, ever since I lost my job at parks and conservation, I have caught more snakes than I ever had to while I was there.

I've caught three at work in the last few months, all Eastern browns. Looks like they are all seeking shelter from the heat.

This little fellow was sitting next to the foot of one of our knife-making students on Thursday, the second time it had been spotted in as many days. Even the grinding, heavy boots and power hammers didn't scare it out of the workshop. Mind you, it was 45 degrees in there most of the day. It would take a lot to get me to go back out in the sun.

All three snakes were released a distance away from the buildings in river habitat where they will be OK.

Disclaimer: Please do not attempt this unless you are trained. (I am).

Eastern Brown snakes, are among the deadliest of the venomous snakes in the world. All it takes is one bite to kill a grown adult.

Fossicking Locations / Is Grabben Gullen dead?
« on: January 16, 2019, 09:39:50 PM »
I read all about Grabben Gullen on this forum and others over a year ago now. Early last year I gave it a go, just upstream and around the bridge.

Nil, Zero, zilch, nada, nuffin.

Not even a spinel.

What's the go? All the other threads on GG seem quite old. Is there any up-to-date information on it?

Ask a "Silly" Question / What scales for weighing gold?
« on: January 11, 2019, 03:45:08 PM »
New to this.

How do you go about weighing gold? What sort of scales? Where would a beginner get reasonable scales?

How much gold would you amass before taking it to a dealer? Also, I know nothing about dealers and what to do with future finds.

Fossicking Locations / Cotter Caves, Canberra - What's there?
« on: August 31, 2018, 06:10:38 PM »
I've been to the Cotter caves and had a look at the old copper mine across the gully and crawled around it what caves i could squeeze into.

Anyone know what minerals can be found there?

Tell Us About Yourself / Rekindling childhood gemhunting.
« on: August 31, 2018, 05:49:36 PM »
G'day, Sandbagger from Canberra here.

I've just rediscovered the joy of sitting in a big dirt hole and scraping and sifting for gemstones. I had a crack at classifying at Grabben Gullen (not even a spinel), then went for a solo drive/camp for four days at Tingha, NSW and Inverell. I came back with half a bucket of quartz crystals, topaz, sapphire, garnet, zircon, rutilated and smokey.

Needless to say I have the bug again.

I first got it as a child in W.A, east of Perth. I was digging an underground cubbyhouse/tunnel, following a rabbit burrow. I was caught by the locals and instructed to destroy it and put the ground back the way it was. In doing so, I spotted a quartz crystal, perfectly clear and terminated. I went back several times and found small pieces, but as a kid I had no idea what to look for. Still, I loved the hunt.

Now, as an adult with several children and a full time job, I hardly have time to go anywhere and fossick.

I love crystals, even if worthless, as long as they are transparent, coloured or not.

Thinking about trying Wee Jasper one day, if I can find a buddy or get some decent directions/mudmaps or contacts.

SB.
