General Discussion / Re: Vale Woofa
« on: January 01, 2017, 11:00:58 PM »
Hi everyone, I am Sharyn, Paul's wife. I just want to say thank you for all the wonderful messages. Our family always knew how kind, loyal and knowledgable (about everything) he was but it is really humbling to here it from others.

He loved his fossicking and sharing his knowledge with others. He use to spend many hours putting together items such as the guessing competitions etc for this forum. He enjoyed hearing of other peoples finds, loved going to Minerama or just going local for a dig.

Paul was supposed to sit his final exam for the gemmology course he was doing via correspondence in Nov but wasn't well enough. He would have blitzed it and passed with flying colours. His plan then was to learn how to learn polish and cut rocks and do valuations, he even set up a little workshop with all the equipment.

Thank you Jerry for being a good friend to Paul.

Thank you once again.
Sharyn

Show off your Gems / Re: Latest Mt Shadwell expedition

Hi MrSydney,
Sorry for the late reply.  I only know of one quarry.

About 14km from Glen Innes on the Gwydir Hwy heading towards Inverell there is a parking area on the left and a track leading to a lookout. The lookout is signposted - my map shows it as "Sinclair Lookout".

About 400m along this track there is old basalt quarry on the left. If you break up the basalt you can find olivine .... and if you're lucky maybe a piece bit enough to facet. Gem grade olivine is called peridot. You will need a good sized hammer to slap the rocks. Some good chisels and goggles would also help.

Good luck and let us know if you have some success.
Regards, Paul
