Wanted / Re: Facetting machine wanted in good working order.
« on: March 27, 2017, 09:45:00 AM »
Must come complete with all accessories required to cut stones. Can pay up to $1000 cash. Can travel up to 200km from melbourne.

I'd be surprised you could get one in good working order with the accessories you require but good luck, hope you find one.  I paid $2000 for my second hand Gemmasta with accessories and thought I got a good deal.

IS anyone else having trouble with GemVal subscription.  Mine was renewed through their payment provided two weeks ago but GemVal still tells me I'm not subscribed.  I've sent them emails without any response and the payment provider has prompted them on my behalf as well but still no success.  Looking a lot like I'l have to put in a PayPal payment dispute.

That is one big piece.

Looking at the growth lines the original crystal must have been a monster when whole.

Trip Talk / Off to O'Briens Creek Today

Northern Gem Show run finished for another year, and what a great year it was.  Great job club members, it's always great to catch up with everyone.  Anyway, my Daughter Tress and I are on the way to O'Briens Creek this morning for the first time so if you see a red Surf and blue Patrol towing trailers say hello.

I saw an article somewhere many years ago related to exactly what you are doing with your bottles.  They used a butane torch to heat the rim until it melted to a smooth finish.

just a note to advise that North Ewingar Road is closed around a kilometre past the intersection with Elkhorn.  There's a good size gum across the road.  This was on Thursday 4 Jun 15.

Really? C'mon...this a 4 and a half y/o thread...

And newbies who won't have found it or regulars who haven't seen the video I just posted aren't going to be interested?  Even Jamo as a VIP member found Harry's earlier photos of interest. Just because a thread is old doesn't mean it should die.

New video of a later expedition into the crystal caves at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSMVhUn8CKI.  It was published in 2013 so some may have already found it.  It's a long one.

Check out what Patrick Gundersen has been finding at Ewingar on Australian Crystals and Minerals page on FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/australiancrystals/?fref=nf).  He's a human crystal detector :)

Cabbing and More / Re: Diamond Smoothing Disks
« on: February 25, 2015, 07:40:11 PM »
New 220 soft lap arrived this morning.  I tried it out on a couple of the chrysoprase cabs I've gradually been working; they were ready for smoothing.  Very happy with it.  For some reason I never had any of the slow behaviour that I had with the 325 lap and I didn't have to use the supercharged settings on my faceting machine either to get good smoothing performance.  Perhaps the grit difference accounts for it but it doesn't seem to be a big enough gap to account for the difference I noted.

If anyone else is thinking of purchasing these I'd recommend going with the 220 and 600 grits.  I also have a 3000 but its naturally more for pre-polish than smoothing.  Anyway, I'm now very happy with the current combination.

I've been puzzling over why this may have happened and I finally came to the conclusion that I may have still had some vinegar in my water on my faceting machine.  I don't know if this would cause the epoxy to soften but I do notice since using a fresh supply of water I'm not experiencing any accelerated wear on the 600 or 3000 laps

Taz, a while back I had a piece of malachite glued to a bit of timber with about half a tube of epoxy. I was advised to soak it in vinegar to remove it. After soaking overnight, the epoxy was as soft as putty and the piece of stone pulled away easily. It had actually partly dissolved and turned green, presumably having absorbed copper from the malachite.

I also removed a garnet that had be epoxy resined to the dop with vinegar - the stone just fell off overnight.

In my experience, plain white vinegar will definately attack epoxy!
Looks like it was probably the vinegar then.  Glad I didn't do a dummy spit and make a fool of myself.  Thanks everyone.  New soft lap that I ordered is supposed to arrive today so I'll keep the vinegar away from it :)

Mainly to remove calcification in the container but I had also read that some US faceters used it so I was giving it a try.

Andrew/ Leah,

Thank you for chasing this one down for me.  I've been puzzling over why this may have happened and I finally came to the conclusion that I may have still had some vinegar in my water on my faceting machine.  I don't know if this would cause the epoxy to soften but I do notice since using a fresh supply of water I'm not experiencing any accelerated wear on the 600 or 3000 laps.  I'm going to give the laps the benefit of the doubt and I've just ordered a 220  so I'll see how that one goes with plain water.

Regards
Taz
