Trip Talk / Re: Back o' Bourke Fossicking Trip
« on: September 04, 2020, 06:35:18 AM »
Hi again,

It's an Indian summer & glorious out west @ the time I'm going out, having lived out there for several years in the 70s. You wouldn't want to be there around Christmas & January especially.

Besides the weather has anyone got any fossicking recommendations for me?

Cheers.

Hi all,

Am combining fossicking & sightseeing 15 November to roughly 29 November staying @ Nyngan, Bourke, White Cliffs, Broken Hill, then Cobar & Dubbo on the return trip.

Have looked @ previous forums but any suggestions for fosscking locations appreciated, thanks.

Cheers & sta safe,

Trip Talk / Re: Nundle and hanging rock trip
« on: July 31, 2020, 06:46:35 AM »
Hi guys,

The Nundle area is beautiful. When out & about wearing gloves,  skin covering clothes is necessary as there are MANY funnel web spiders right trough the pines & up the mountain. I have friends at Hanging Rock who alerted me to this years ago & I remember vividly going out with torches one night to spot so many sets of little spider eyes in the banks etc down the back of their yard. Gear up, be aware as you dig.

Cheers,

Hi & welcome encapsu.
Specialist equipment - sieves & gold pan - needed.
Out Eldorado way in streams s good. Under big rocks or the downstream side of rock bars, inside curves of banks are good collecting spots.
Always fill holes & leave places much as you found them.
Hard work & patience helps as does the right attitude: enjoy being out in nature, if you make finds then it's a bonus.
Cheers,
colza  :)

Ask a "Silly" Question / Re: Jade Guitar Frets

Hi & welcome to the forum thesingingchef.

I'd take the easy way out & pay someone skilled to do the job. This will undoubtedly save much frustration & some waste of your jade.

Cheers,

Hi Dembones & welcome to the forum.

There are so many books you could buy, or maybe you could access some digitally via libraries.
A favourite of mine & well worth having @ home is Australian and New Zealand Gemstones, how and where to find them, ed. Bill Myatt.

Policeman pulled over a young bloke.
"You were 10 kms over the 60 limit, son."
"Sorry officer, I wasn't paying attention."
"What's your name?"
"D-D-D-David."
The policeman gave him a sharp look, thinking he was having a go.
"Do you have a stammer?"
"No, I don't but my dad did. That b... so & so @ the Registry!"

Cheers,

Hi,
You could always unshackle, park up & drive in for some hours of fossicking.

Gemstone Discussions / Re: Can you name and roughly appraise these gems?
« on: February 08, 2020, 09:15:52 AM »
Hi VP1,

Agree with Rusted on the IDs. Dr Google could probably give approximate values / carat but there are other variables determining quality & what someone might be prepared to pay.

Welcome to ALF.

Ask a "Silly" Question / Re: Dopping Stones
« on: February 04, 2020, 05:42:50 AM »
Hi tinker,

I use the green wax to dop after putting a couple of drops on the stone, hitting that with a bbq lighter then pressing the formed wax home to it.

After a cuppa and a good yarn it's usually ready to work.
