Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your feedback about the Rosemeadow field trip. I have discussed this with the Field Trip Coordinator Peter and we will take your concerns to the meeting next week. At this stage the committee might look at cancelling the trip, however there is not another one to replace it.

On another note the field trip to Glen Elgin is new and is not an area that has been touched before, I understand you're after sapphires not gold but if you're interested it will be a great day.

Thanks

Navanka

Mr Sydney,
It is my understanding that at Rosemeadow the group will be going to the same part. However, the field trip coordinator has indicated that there will be a competition organised to find hidden marbles in return for a nice prize.
The organisers have spread out the field days as best as they can. Property owners only give permission for field days to occur on certain days at certain times. Due to this the field trips have been organised when it is suitable for the owners to have them.
I hope that answers your question.
Regards
Navanka

Mr. Sydney

Thank you for your email. Allow me to apologise now as I went or leave just after your posting as I resigned a Tourism manager from 1st Feb to take up a job in Melbourne. However do not be alarmed I am still doing some casual work for the Council and Minerama and a very capable young lady (Navanka Fletcher) has been employed as the Events Coordinator. Navanka is a local and has just completed her Bachelor of Tourism (along with having some very practical experience to boot - not all academic!!!)

To be honest I cannot answer that question and will pass over to the Committee to respond. There is Minerama Meeting tomorrow and Navanka will respond following that meeting.

Regards

Hi ALFERS....back from leave and ready to stat some posts.

Question received about the Oban Site Field Trip 3 Thursday - PLEASE NOTE Only 25 Adults and 5 Children AND 4 X 4 ONLY

The site is on private property south of Haystack. The site from what I have been told was an old Gold mining site so lots of heaps to explore and the Oban River

When the site was inspected it was decided to restrict it to 4x4s as the track is not well define and one rocky gully to cross.

FOSSICKING SITES UP AND BOOKABLE at https://www.minerama.com.au/fossicking/field-trips/

Thanks to the work of Peter Chaffey and his band of willing volunteers there are 10 Field Trips to choose from in 2018. Trip 6 - Twilight Fossicking is new addition commencing at 1:00pm with a talk about fossils found in the Emmaville area with an opportunity to search for some specimens and jellybean crystals. This will be followed by a sausage sizzle (approx. $5.00) near dusk and then the UV lights come out to look for fluorite. Bring you own UV lights or buy them at Minerama for $22.00.

Most sites do not have amenities. Please check the website and come prepared.

Hi Alfers,

Time to get things rolling for 2018. A few answers to questions would be a help to start the planning process. But first....

As most of the serious gem hunters realise, the chance of finding that big blue takes a lot of work and sweat. We get feedback each year about the trips with $25.00 not being value for money and a great disappointment. Please know that $10.00 goes to the property owner and believe me they are getting few are far between these days.

As you know we endeavour to source properties where people can't usually get access to. We have listened and have started now engaging with property owners, talking to a few of the older miners around town, finding out where the the mining didn't happen in the 1960's to 70's etc. A few places are starting to pop up but need more following up etc. Also remember we do go out to prospective sites to test etc and unless we find something worth charging you a trip fee we do not just put it up for the sake of filling a field trip. We prefer to have less trips in this case than more.

We are also looking to start a new campaign entitled "Fossicking is Fun" to attract a younger generation of mums and dads and their kids.

QUESTIONS
  • How far are you prepared to drive from Glen Innes to get to a fossicking spot 20km, 30k, 40k, 50k. I know you will say it depends on what we are expecting to get - so for each distance is it worth telling us. Maybe you just do it for the fun anyway. You may not want to travel 40kms for jelly beans or zircon etc. This year, fossickers travelled 50km to a site 5k past Emmaville for emeralds
  • Let us know if you have a particular stone or item you are looking for..and don't say 100 carat sapphire or diamond!!!! ::)
  • Are fossils and petrified wood something to build a trip around.
  • Are you prepared to get dirty and tired and dig or just try out wash in a creek.
  • I know some people like to go to disused mines and we have quite a few around here. Anyone interested in a trip if we can get the OK
  • Is there an area you have heard about near Glen and we can check it out?
  • How about something on the Oban River?
Anything else worthwhile to add?

....and I will continue to remain light hearted!!!!!

Regards
Peter Teschner

ALFer's will recall that I posted a comment about the Sara River/Kookabookra site having signs posted saying that we had received info that there were signs up saying Trespassers will  prosecuted. Peter Chaffey and I visited there this morning and could not see any signs of this nature. There is a cattle grid on the western side of the Pinkett Rd leading onto a Crown Reserve Road which is on the southern side of the old Tennis Courts that we went over and went down to the creek.

The land to the south of the old Tennis Courts down to the Creek is Crown Land that adjoins the land to the north and west of the Tennis Court and is under lease to a local property owner. Driving a bit further west down the crown reserve road brings you to a fence and a gate which again is crown land and leased by a different property owner.

Peter and I then drove the 7 klms thru to the Oban River along the Kookabookra Rd. What great country that is. Plenty of water around with the river flowing 20mm over the crossing.

Enjoy your stay Alfers. Marked out the outdoor trader sites today. Already a few outdoorers waiting at the gate to set up in the morning. I will be spending a bit of my time in the Services Club Board room looking after the UNE display. Come by and say hello if you get a chance...and good luck drive safely.

Peter BTW over 45,000 people reached on Facebook boosts since begining of Feb

Yarrow Creek site still has 20+ trips available. I saw last week a photo of what was achieved in 3/4h by Peter Chaffey who has organise our sites this year. I reckon it is worth booking.
