Gemstone Discussions / Re: Any geologists out there?
« on: January 17, 2019, 11:06:56 PM »
Hi Harryopal, just a quick spot of research on this one, I doubt that you would find olivine bombs near Mt Agung the chemistry isn't quite right. You would typically only see olivine bombs in mafic to ultramafic rocks whereas Mt Agung appears to be more of an Intermediary composition.

Gemstone Faceting / Re: The Batt Lap are they worth buying?

Correct me if i am wrong but Buch Metter shouldn't you have the 8k and 14k switched as diamond will migrate from the centre to the edge therefore contaminating your 14k with 8k?

Hey Everyone,

If anyone is coming down for Gemboree at Willunga on the Easter weekend would anyone be interested in an ALFers catch up?

Cabbing and More / Carvers Please
« on: January 12, 2018, 03:20:43 PM »
Hi Everyone, (Leah please let me know if any issues with this post)

A few of you would have seen my intermittent posts mostly about faceting or rocks in general but been pretty quiet of late due to uni first and now work.

At the moment I am working in insurance for jewellery and valuables on the procuring side of things and we've had a couple of clients looking at replacing or purchasing gemstone carvings so I thought I would come to where I know there are carvers as we dont have anyone in our system currently who can do high quality carvings based in Aus (we only use Aus jewellers/suppliers).

If anyone has a business (well an ABN preferably) or knows of someone who is doing carvings professionally who might be able to help out that would be great, if you want to discuss this with me let me know and I will send you a private message with my contact details on it any general questions chuck on here

General Discussion / Re: Hi again everyone

Cheers for the welcome back everyone.

My field is on economic geology and geochemistry.

So the thesis that I ended up with for my honours (what I'm doing) is looking at magmatic bodies and their relationships to mineralisation. Got some weird and wonderful results haha

Hi everyone,

Its been ages since I've posted or been on here, I have been crazy busy with work and my thesis but not far off getting back into the swing of all things lapidary again so I thought I would pop in and say hi and see how everyone is going?

Hey Eddie if you look in the other siliceous gems section you can find reference to citrine locations. the first one I came across was on page 16 with Beacon as the location. hope that helps

I read some time ago on the Australian lapidary group on facebook about people using double sided tape. I personally haven't tried that method yet but it fits into the theme of 'the other method'

Ask a "Silly" Question / Re: Old Hall Faceting Machine 96 Index
« on: October 07, 2015, 09:19:50 PM »
At the moment I'm weighing up the pros and cons of spending the $650-700 on getting the student version of the rhino 3d suite so I can use it for jewellery design and Im also interested to see how well making custom index wheels works i.e. ovals etc.

I don't know how possible this would be but if you could find the dimensions could you have it 3D printed?

Gemstone Faceting / Re: facet wiping
« on: September 24, 2015, 08:27:01 AM »
Welcome to the forum roho, you'll find that its an excellent place full of information and wonderful people. I use ear buds and tissues mostly, very rarely do I have any issues with them leaving debris on the facet. Good luck with your faceting adventures  beers

Gemstone Faceting / Re: Polish residue???
« on: September 22, 2015, 06:35:44 PM »
Thats quite odd, I've always been able to remove residual polish with a tissue and at most some metho the only thing I can really think of is maybe small scratches at the facet boundaries? maybe check it with a hand lens or something? apart from that I'm stumped as to what it could be, lovely stone though  :)

Gemcad Discussions / Re: Gemray Query
« on: September 16, 2015, 11:03:10 AM »
I have a tendency to optimize my designs such that the brightness is generally high and even across the whole face of the stone. Ive attached the 3 graphs that are associated with the designs I use based off the srb with sapphire srb just using my angles without changing any of the relationships or adding in more facets
