Jewellery Talk / Re: Notching
« on: December 09, 2011, 02:20:26 PM »
Thanks for the tips. I have passed the info onto Mr T. I had a look at the site you recommended Leah and I reckon I will stick with going 35ft underground with my jack hammer and leaving Mr T with the cutting and stuff :) Each to their own is so true.

Jewellery Talk / Notching

Mr T (son, thanks for the nickname Deb) is setting some of his cut stones. He now realizes that he needs to notch some findings. We had never heard of notching before. Can anyone advise on ways to do this. Someone said a dremel is good. Thanks

Thanks for the info. We live at Moranbah but have just been out to our claim at rubyvale for a few days. We went to a number of places getting prices for findings and did end up buying some. I have also bought some online, including from Aussie Sapphires, to get him started.

Can anyone tell me where we can buy jewellery findings in Australia. 9ct and sterling silver. Preferably snap tite. Son is stepping up his cutting and would like to get into jewellery making also. Simple things to start with.

General Discussion / Storeholder at Anakie Gemfest

For anyone that attended the Anakie Gemfest this year. Does anyone know the name/contact of the store holders that sold cheap jewelery display things. I noticed them give a customer a card with their web site. They were situated to the right of the entertainment stage (that's if you were facing front on to the stage).

Gemstone Faceting / Re: Polishing Moranbah diamond
« on: August 30, 2011, 03:48:18 PM »
"Mr T" walked out with the Moranbah diamond in claws - all finished! Man of few words, when I asked how he had fixed it, he just said he worked it out. He uses diamond spray and is having a go at cutting different stones. Tried to take a photo but they aren't working out. Maybe I should ask him for advice on how to take better ones :)

My son is cutting a Moranbah diamond and is having trouble with the polish. Anyone got any tips for him?

Gemstone Faceting / Re: Faceting Amethyst
« on: July 30, 2011, 03:55:13 PM »
Thanks

He's just finished another one and had no problems with it so maybe it was just that stone. I passed on the hint about the damp cloth on the actual stone.

Todays stone is a beautiful colour. It is from Bimbi (?) near Bowen. It is much lighter in colour than the ones we got from Amethyst Castle which all seem to be very dark.

Gemstone Faceting / Faceting Amethyst

Hi All

My son is fairly new to faceting and has been doing some great cutting. He did certificate (?) one and two out at sapphire a couple of years ago but has only recently got back into cutting again.

Yesterday he cut and polished an amethyst but when he was removing it from the dobstick (he heats it with a flame) it shattered. Does anyone know if this would be because amethyst doesn't like heat or would it have just been this particular stone? Any other tips on cutting amethyst would be much appreciated.

Hi Sioux (previously Sue) here. We have been out to Amethyst Castle recently and dug a nice collection of Amethyst crystals but they have a hard coating on them. Can anyone suggest what we can use to clean them. Some are in clusters.
