General Discussion / Re: Am I Lucky, or What?

Nice to see the scammers using snail mail, it makes a nice change to the 'your computer is broken' phone calls we get.

Actually, Makky, the parcel of small sapphires I sent to them (some time ago now) was returned with good meet points and no windowing. They were a lot cheaper then as well. Maybe I just caught a good cutter as then they had quite a few. Sapphireminer, did you ask them to cut as big a they could or did you request particular cuts as you can do both. I did request to cut as big as they could without calibration and was very happy with the results.

I can assure you that they aren't scammers, they've been in the business for quite a while but as I mentioned are notoriously slow. Tailor Marc above just mentioned that he has waited for 8 months. I must admit though, that it's disappointing they haven't replied to your emails. All I can suggest is wait.

They have always been slow, how long have your stones been away?

Tell Us About Yourself / New Clubrooms
« on: May 31, 2019, 12:39:34 PM »
Hi all. For those that are travelling and would like to catch up with our club, the Burnie District Gemstone Club, I would like to advise that we are no longer at Highclere. We have secured a long term lease through the Burnie City Council on a building within the confines of the Wivenhoe trotting track. Entry is located on Smith St, Wivenhoe and as yet we do not have an official street number. Our sign will be going up in the next week although we have much work left to do to set up the new building. It's been a fairly hard 4 weeks of work to move, surprising how much rock a club can store! All contact details are still the same. Visitors are always welcome, even though there's not much to look at just yet. Give us a few weeks.

Wanted / Re: gem rough Darwin to Broome

I did do a bit of specking while up that way last (2012) but without a bucket of water to wash potential agates, it was nearly impossible to pick them out in creek beds due to a covering of red dust/mud. I would suggest some form of water spray may be of assistance, similar to what you would use at Stratford in Victoria.

Yep, great little tool and small enough to carry 'just in case'.

Hi Grant, when you're in Kununurra, try and search out 'the Rock Doctor', not even sure if he's still alive but if he is, he had (in 2012) a cracker collection of agate from the Kimberley area some of which is comparable to Agate Creek. There is also amethyst in the area but I'm not sure if the quality is for cabbing or faceting. Other than the Rock Doc, I can't recall any gem shops (other than Argyle Diamonds) in that area.

This is the short handled mattock I find invaluable when fossicking, a lot cheaper than an Estwing.

Hi Lyn, it depends on what you want to do. I have a mattock for working harder ground and a short handled lightweight mattock for tighter areas. I also have a geo pick but admit, I don't use that a great deal these days, the light mattock I find better to use. Mine is from Bunnings if memory serves me correct, the Estwing ones are a bit harder to find here and hence expensive to buy online and get posted.

Fossicking Locations / Re: Fossicking contacts for Bellata
« on: May 02, 2019, 05:29:04 PM »
To my knowledge, the quarry at Bellata is out of bounds, most of the fossicking is done on the side of the roads int he area, wherever new work is done is better. Apparently the old caravan park manager was quite helpful, however that has long since closed. There are some here that go there more regularly than I, hopefully they may be able to help you out.

Trip Talk / Re: Heading to Gemtree & Harts Range

Glad to hear you had a reasonable trip Jamo. Always nice to hear about others trips. Sounds like I'll have to make a detour into there next time I'm through the centre. Hope you can at least get some of the photos off your phone.

Thanks for that Leah, now that I know that I'll be in contact, I'm assuming that it's financially suitable to get them re-surfaced. I did enjoy using it before I damaged it.

Swirly I may as well throw my two bobs worth. I facet a lot of quartz and to date, haven't had a problem. I use a pewter lap with white cerium oxide exclusively. I too have a Facetron that does slow down, although I've never measured the actual speed, I use it on the slowest possible setting. Pre polish is done with a very well worn 1200 lap only. Whilst I know that others use 3000 or even 8000 for pre polish, I find this old lap works for me. I have used a dark side lap with good results, again with cerium oxide, but after I accidentally dropped the quill on it and lightly gouged it, I seem to get really light scratches when using it now.
