Ask a "Silly" Question / Re: Strategy
« on: September 26, 2013, 01:08:59 AM »
We purposely backroad as much as possible going to and from established fossicking locations [some known, some ours], checking every road cut and watercourse we come across. Wet flows are obviously best at low water, but even dry washes consentrate pieces of whatever is in the area. Another place to look is ant hills, as they pull bits of underground mtl. up in the construction of their nests, magnifier helpful here.

With a half-life of over 300 trillion years, nearly as long as some packaged snack foods.

I used to have the availability of scrap mtls. from my sawmill maint. job. This is a lantern ring [spacer] from a hydraulic/ pneumatic valve, nice for things w/a "rounder" shape. Mine vary from ~25-50 mm in dia. Each valve has several in it.

Thanks for the replies. Simple fix, yes, and perhaps the only practical one, but a sad one. We don't care much for land fills.

Thanks so much for the new video, the more we see, the more we get enthused about coming for a visit soon.

General Discussion / Question about desalinization
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:58:12 PM »
We watched an interesting T.V. show last night about a new seawater desalinization plant to supply Melbourne. Our question, that didn't get answered on the show; what is done with all the salt and other minerals that come out of the seawater? Did a bunch of hunting around this evening, but learned nothing. Reading shows Australia to be very much into making fresh water, hopefully someone can tell us a little about this, or give guidance to find the information. Thanks, Larry

Assuming your weight is contained in something; coffee can or bucket comes to mind here. Try having the weight container come down into a bucket of water, the increasing bouyancy as the container sinks into the water softens the end of cut breakage. I've seen this done, takes some fiddling, but it's cheap.

Another fun and interesting year of following ALF'ers around, thanks to all. From us, wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Very nice. The stone/metal color contrast is great.

Watched your tours, thanks. Handy for you to have firewood available where you go, several of our places we have to carry ours with us.

Please do, keep 'em coming. The more we see of Australia, the more we want to see in person. We aren't city or tourist trap people, getting out in the brush and enjoying natures bounty [especially the rocks] is the good life for us. Thank you.

Thanks for posting the hail storm video, nasty, glad you came out O.K. I also watched a couple of area associated videos on the "tube". To date, these are my best tourist trips in AU, beautiful country. With the exception of tree species, were you to come here to Oregon, you couldn't tell much difference, including the occasional road washout and the cows in open range areas. Makes us want to come visit you folks even more, hopefully in a couple years. People ask why we want to go to AU, why else, mostly to meet with like-minded people and hunt rocks.

Following this is making "joke of the day" seem pretty lame. Thanks to all.
