General Discussion / Question about desalinization
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:58:12 PM »
We watched an interesting T.V. show last night about a new seawater desalinization plant to supply Melbourne. Our question, that didn't get answered on the show; what is done with all the salt and other minerals that come out of the seawater? Did a bunch of hunting around this evening, but learned nothing. Reading shows Australia to be very much into making fresh water, hopefully someone can tell us a little about this, or give guidance to find the information. Thanks, Larry

General Discussion / Leap Second
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:00:32 AM »
We were all given an extra second yesterday by having a "leap second" added to the day, hope everyone used it productively. I found it took much longer than that to reset my sundial, had to use a specimen microscope, especially difficult considering that it was very cloudy.

Been following you folks around for another year already, what fun, and I've learned some too. Want to wish all a very Merry Christmas and Happy new year. May your rocks surface easily and polish well.

General Discussion / Need a job
« on: September 23, 2010, 12:21:04 AM »
The end of last week I got sacked [restructured, they put it] out of my job. Worked 22+ years helping keep a sawmill running, and hoped for a couple more. The timber industry is flatter than a board here [sorry for the pun, but I had to]. Chances of finding work here slim to none. Funds will be a little tight now, might be able to ship us over in a well-stocked container. With winter coming here, suppose I'll have time to send some pics. of our stuff, now that I know how. Still holding hope to be able to come visit and do some fossicking in your area one day. This forum, and all on it, are a great enjoyment, thanks to all.

General Discussion / cheap rock tumblers
« on: August 01, 2010, 02:44:54 AM »
Did it again, timed out while writing.
I've now finished ten tumblers of various sizes for us and others, and all have worked out well. D.I.Y. is a good option. I use P.V.C. for barrels, 7/16" or about 11mm. min. thickness, and U.H.M.W. or white nylon plastic [cutting board mtl. as seen in food stores] for the end caps.
Real busy here now, ripped our one bathroom to the studs except for the pot, got new shower in and drywall up, got to get to finishing the mudding. Made a simple shower stall out back [summer here] and the perimeter drain catches the water, warm from a hose off the utility room, not at all intolerable.
If you get serious about building, post back, and I'll be happy to help as best I can when things get done here. $80 will need some serious scrounging, but that's half the fun. You can build a much more durable unit than you can buy for the money.

Tumblers and Media / tumbling polish questions
« on: July 03, 2010, 11:59:14 PM »
A couple questions for calx, or anyone else that tumbles. Can I get a comparison of using ALO and tripoli for polish, and of using pellets vs. leather for padding. We have used tripoli for polish for several years with good result, does ALO work better? Understanding too, that all rocks react differently. We mostly tumble pet. wood and agate.

I want to wish all on the ALF a Merry Christmas And Happy New Year. This is THE place I visit on the net, interesting, informative, and fun [bovinite ?]. Best wishes to all, and thanks.

General Discussion / crystal cave in Mexico
« on: November 26, 2009, 11:32:39 AM »
Caught an hour long National Geographic show about the big crystal cave in Mexico, fantastic. People walking on crystals as if they were bridges. Anyone who is able should try to see it.

General Discussion / A couple general questions
« on: August 02, 2009, 01:23:03 AM »
A couple questions to you folks in Australia. I live in the U.S. [Oregon] and have only been out of the country barely into Canada years ago, and a free all-expence-paid trip to sunny South Vietnam in 70-71, compliments of the U.S. Army. Is it your prefence to call this country America, as I frequently read? I believe you use the metric system of measurement entirely; here we are stuck primarily using the old feet and inches thing; perhaps evolution will catch us up someday. Being a machinist and doing all our mechanical work at home, I'm comfortable w/mm. but a little rusty at converting the rest of the system. Would it be acceptable or preferable were I to use the metric system in communications on this forum? This would also give me a sort of "language immersion". I pray to the outdoors daily that one day we will join the rest of the world in embracing the metric system of measurement, but at 62, I won't see it.
