Ask a "Silly" Question / Cooking Matrix Opal
« on: April 01, 2019, 11:41:09 AM »
Learned colleagues, I have recently came into some Matrix Opal from Winton in Queensland, It is the raw material and I have been told, to get the colours to come up in the stone.  You either have to burn it in sugar or in a light oil, is that correct, I was  previously told that you use sulphur acid and sugar.   Any advise would be much appreciated. beers

General Discussion / Canberra Rock Swap
« on: March 31, 2019, 10:33:14 AM »
Went to the Canberra Rock swap yesterday, very cold, but a very good turn up of sellers, largest lot I've seen in the 8 years I've been going.   Probably about 40 stalls, a lot of new dealers, especially with Boulder Opal and Winton matrix opal.  Norm Mandue you and your team did a great job and of course I spent too much money but the finished products will look great.

Hi Kindu, I'm from Tura Beach just north of Merimbula, we haven't got a Lapidary Club as such.  But there is a group of us that meet once a week and do a bit of fossicking around the place. I will message you with my contact details.

Thanks Mr Sydney, yes I received a reply to an email this morning and they informed me that the hold up was that they had lost some of their cutters over the last few months and are in the process of replacing them.   They stated that they are 4 to 6 months behind because of this issued and apologised for the delays, they stated that my stones were still there and they are getting to all jobs as quick as possible.

Fellow Rockhounds, does anybody know whether Lambert Industries is still operating, I have heard recently that they have been bought out by another company.  I fellow rock hound friend of mine sent some rough to be fascited back in August last year and has not received them back as yet.   Does anybody know if the info I was told is correct or not.

Makky, have they gone back to allowing you into the quarry on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays.  I was last there April 2018 and they were only allowing fossickers in there on a Saturday.

PhilK, Mt Shadwell at Mort Lake is good for Peridot, it is a scaria quarry owned by Moyne Shire, you have to apply at the Shire Office in Mortlake to go onto the property, but its only open on Saturdays to Fossicking, the foreman at the Quarry will show you where you can fossick.

I have excess to Pyripholite and soap stone also, Bega Valley Sand stone, I will get a couple of photographs and get back to you.

Thanks for the idea's fella's, I use 100grit, 220 360, 600 and then 1200, then onto a cotton pad with tin or Cerium Oxide 3,000.  Its only since Ive been using the Diamond Wheels that I have found the problem, prior to this I was using the Silicone Carbide wheels 100, 220, 400, 600 and 1200 and didn't have the problems.

Thanks again fella's

Yep these shows always seem to good to be true and the amazing thing is they always find good opal or gold on either show.  But thats the media these days, reality shows, really aren't telling the real story.
