Thanks Gemster,
That particular part of our trip, I was really looking forward to. Hope we can find some goodies too.
And yes, too many are closing due to those few who can't take direction.

We finalised our week up to Inverell. Going to Tingha Sands first, staying in park nearby for 2 nights.  Next was Billabong Blue for  2 nights, then on to Deepwater for another 2 nights, fossicking at Torrington. But I have since read they were thinking of closing this area down to fossickers, is this true, or are they still at the thinking stage??? I hope it isn't closing, as it suits our travelling plan to a T

Ranger Itchy,
You must try Black Springs, Oberon. It's difficult work, but I guess if I can do it, anyone can. Go into the clearing along the tree line, way up the back of the public fossicking area. And take plenty of Aeroguard!

Unfortunately, this day and age, it happens in all circumstances. We loved taking our sons to quiet fishing areas, usually 4wd access areas. But it is those few who ruin it for others doing the right thing. So now these areas are closed, gated off. That's why we prefer the quiet peaceful laid back lifestyle. Most of the public are horrible and rude and we limit ourselves being amongst them. Where's that Lotto win??? Get us out of here!!!

Hi Ranger Itchy,
It seems we have dates for early March for about a week, but thanks for the offer. We also decided on BB as a base, they also have bush showers now. I had been looking at Tingha Sands, an easy option, to give the back a rest, just trying to decide on other places to visit, any suggestions?

Hi MrSydney,
I'll have to devise a way To take some photos to put up. The two that have been cut are especially nice, the other stones are uncut, some you can see on the picture I used for this site. We have only visited Oberon (Black Springs), where most of them have come from. But a few also came in the bucket of dirt from Inverell, for my mothers Day gift.

Thanks crocket and findem,
Yes, the plan has us excited once again. Fishing ended up being such a pain and not enjoyable any more. Plus I am from old fossicking stock, my dad, God bless, was very much into it, I remember him coming home with a rather large clear glass like faceted specimen, when we lived in a tiny town in NSW, Kerrs Creek, near Orange, And my ancestors were from Maldon, Vic.
So the years ahead will once again be interesting, I hope.

Thanks jimneyjerry,
I did purchase a permit in case we dug outside the public areas.
I guess we were extremely lucky then, finding what we did. Because as you said, it's been dug over numerous times over the years.
And I will look into minerama, we are keen to try anything that will help us learn the correct skills.
You have helped greatly. Thank you.  ;D ;D ;D

My family have been involved in fishing, in all aspects, for many many years. It's now time for a shift into fishing for gems, we are over the dog eat dog world, it's too tiring people are rude, self centred and they will do whatever to get ahead.
My early years were in the country, my father loved fossicking for gold. And now my family, or at least some of them are wanting a shift toward gem hunting.
My son and myself have been to Oberon, twice, my hubby came the second time. We ended up at a public site near Black Springs, not knowing what to expect, we walked in, avoiding the potholes that hadn't been back filled. It resembled Swiss cheese, and we managed to find a spot that was virgin ground, and because there had been heavy rain, we moved further away from the "dry" creek bed and we managed to find quite a few stones. Because  my son and his wife had travelled north west on a holiday 2 years ago and stopped off in Inverell, they  brought back two buckets of dirt which had a number of sapphires in them, We are now planning a trip there in Feb/Mar camping. What I would like to know is where we can camp, with facilities nearby, but not too close to crowds, dig sites and mapping of the area would be handy too.
Love the site, helps those who are starting out especially.
