Show us your latest finished product / Re: Who knows what this is ?
« on: November 28, 2015, 12:57:27 PM »
G'day
Give it a good clean then some more clues would be good.
  • History (where it came from)
  • hardness (scratch it some where with a knife.)
  • streak (what color the scratch is?)
  • Weight
Looks organic to me ? Perhaps a sponge.

Regards Nigel.

We were at Mt Gibson in the June holidays, but we came in from Battles Creek side.So were down on Wilcox Gully.
Black Beauty is an old mine, requires an old map. Some of the datum pegs are still in place.
Lefty if you were there in June how did you go.

Sounds like a good day regardless.
How was the road.
If Quartz is your target next time try "Black Beauty" which is south of the "Glittering Star".

Have you offered a Peppercorn?

That way their only in their own way and your application can proceed.
$100 annually is usually exceptable.

The problem we have locally, is actual determination of native title, when there is a number of conflicting claimants.

I don't doubt it's all mess to sort out.

Lefty, Our family has been on the Coolgarra field in some way shape or form since 1886, tin or wolfram, our tradition was to name a mine after a ladies name, if we picked up a mine we retained the original name.

Lefty, sorry couldn't, tell you I'm in NQ not CQ.

We were lucky with the transfer of our lease as its been continuous prior to ILUA so the whole process took about 3 months.

Interestingly enough I remember as a kid going to the wardens office in herberton with the grandfather and him lodging two claims, after lunch he collected the paperwork and we were on our way home.

Regards Nigel.

Look up the ILUA process, the native title tribunal will determine if there is a case for an agreement.
Is this an existing claim or new claim.
There may also be an access agreement required dependent on the tenure of the surrounding land.
It costs about $2000.00 annually to maintain our lease , however retaining the mine as a claim will cost about half that dependent on your level of insurance.

Dylan it's worth every cent. Good luck and go for it.

Hi Cam
The material certainly looks the part, perhaps look for the direct route to the pocket, by expanding your prospect, look around the rest of the ridge the best stones will come from crossovers ,intersection or turns of the seam.
Good luck Nigel.

Ask a "Silly" Question / Re: What is this rock?
« on: June 11, 2015, 10:13:43 PM »
Well Gareth the sample certainly is a mystery.
With out a history, identification is difficult, to me it definitely looks molten and not charred, the circular nature of the flaking on the outer mask ,could point to the presence of chondrules which indicates an extra terrestrial origin.

Perhaps the best course of action would be to contact a professional (someone who's  career description is a large Latin word)

Whether it's a meteorite, tektite or a piece of leaverite. I would treat it with great care until confirmation came either way.

Regards Nigel.

G'day Gareth An interesting sample.
Some additional information would be helpful.

IE. is it
  • Alone
  • magnetic
  • type of ground it was found on
Thanks Nigel

It would be nice if it's a Tektite.

Lava plains is exactly 100 klm  south of garnet on the eastern side of the highway, from the greenvale side the car park is about 3 klm north of Wyandotte creek.

There's a new galvanized turnstile and the GPA map.

Fossicking Locations / Re: Mt garnet
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:00:17 PM »
Unfortunately most of the more interesting deposits around garnet are under lease.

The dredge when operating pulled plenty of tumbled topaz from the ragar beds, the source of which was the "Jack" which is a kilometer further up Nettles on the western side of the creek, from Mt Gibson.

The thing with the the jigs on the dredge they rejected material of non conformed shape, so big smokey's and  mis-shaped tumbles ended up in the tailings, Where the remains of the dredge are currently is surrounded by tailings.

The other source of topaz on Nettles is the "Yellow Jack" and it was known for its colored stones.

Was at lava plains GPA, on the weekend, was miserable weather.
Our best stone was a 6.5 ct royal blue.So their definitely worth the effort.
