Ewingar info
« on: September 18, 2010, 10:06:56 AM »
Hi All

wondering whether anybody can give me any info about where to look in Ewingar. Apparently it is ok for smokey quartz. Does anybody have any mud maps?

thanks

Hopefully someone will help you out on this question soon.

In the meantime, the following is from Paul Clacher's fossicking website:
Quote
EWINGAR STATE FOREST is about an hour from Bonalbo and about 100 years away from Brisbane. This is deep forest country. I wouldn't like to spend a night in the forest there by myself. The area is littered with beautiful waterfalls, ferny creeks, tall redwoods, Gold diggings and smoky quartz crystals. Fossils are also reportedly found in this area. Recently a large smoky quartz crystal was recovered weighing about 20 kg. This is truly a magical area. You will need shoes and clothing that doesn't matter if it gets wet. Better still bring your togs and sand shoes. You will need a bucket and a small geopick. (and a 1/2 inch sieve and shovel in the car just in case) Oh yes there is also gold in the area. Cost is free. You will need a permit from the Casino Forrestry.

Bet there be heaps of leeches by that lovely description of the place...  :o
Got three black ones on me out at Red Range area the other day...Glad it wasn't one of those Tiger's I'd need a blood transfusion if I had one of those suckers on me as long as one of these little black ones was on me...    :(

Don't let that stop you though?  Nothing gained without sacrifice ! beers

An article on fossicking in this area in this issue of Bush Telegraph a few years ago.

http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0010/267643/bush-telegraph-winter-2004.pdf

you have to page down to about p10.

Agree ticks are a pain, bites itch for a month. Black leeches at Red Range
that is not good  :o  Did not think there were any leeches east of Glen Innes
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

I think it's more related to the unusual amounts of rain we've had in the general area, coupled by animals such as roos given them a free ride to new feeding grounds...found a grey looking variety out at Sara River (Pinket) earlier this year...  This coming warm wet season looks like it'll be a bumper crop for Flies, Leeches, Ticks and Snakes, followed by a lot of tree growth and bush fires when/if it all dries out...

Ewingar looks like a great place to go despite all said...

Out of curiosity Is there any home remedy or other-wise a product you can put on or drink that stops ticks or leeches finding you an attractive smorgasbord?   Wearing a yellow Spandex body suit in the bush might be (to some) a little more scary than the little biters...    ;D

I cannot vouch for this idea but someone told me rubbing Vicks on your legs will keep leeches away.  Whether this works I have no idea.  Ted doesnt believe me when I say the leeches dont attack me here but 'tis true so have not needed to test this one out.

worth a try.

How much salt is in your diet???

Not too much but probably should cut down a bit more.  Shouldnt think it would be excessive  ???

Hadnt heard of this theory - might be something to it.

Ah I believe yu Leah, was just bit sceptical of their bein no leaches in Reddistone creek but in the interests of tourist operators :-X ,. Of course yu ruined me justification for taking pretty ladys fossicking so I could chuck em in first to attract all the leaches :(
In some quarters I seem to be believed as I noticed despite gumboots, stockings and long waterproofs one little lady managed two days fossicking without getting her feet wet at Grabben Gullen after leaches were mentioned.
                                             beers Ted

Leeches have been known to swim miles to attach themselves to me-I like to think it's my innate animal magnetism. However, since discovering Vicks, no leeches. The leeches report a clearing of their sinuses as well. Another classic win/win situation.

I generally stay to running water in the reddestone, don't see too many leeches that way...

Another thing you can do is thrash the surface of the water you want to fossick in, attracts the nasty buggers to the surface... then procede to blow them away with a shot gun... works every time!  and no vicks required.   ;D

Went to that link and gee.... they really encourage fossickers don't they.

you must not: • excavate, undercut or damage the bank of any watercourse •interfere with the flow of water in any watercourse • cause pollution of any watercourse • disturb mud or clay or fine silt so as to cause significant turbidity in any watercourse • drill or excavate a hole larger than 1 metre x 1 metre • damage or take any bush rock.

Is a `bush rock' a rock that is made out of bush. Otherwise it would seem to preclude taking just about anything.
