Building a Willoughby
« on: November 19, 2010, 04:48:00 PM »
I have only just joined the Forum and I found the Pic of Sandgropers Willoughby.
I am wishing to make one, so am hoping you might send me more details and measurements of the great machine.
Lengths of all the separate pieces would be great.
I trust you are happy with its operation after all this time.
My e-mail is :   PLEASE SEND PM if you can help Dennis
In case I cant get your design details, I would appreciate willoughby design details from anyone else as well.
Thanks in anticipation of a positive response
Dennis

Hi sandonkid.

Welcome to ALF.

Firstly, I suggest that you remove your email address from your post as people can trawl that and you may end up with plenty of spam. We can send you a private message if we need to contact you.

Now, about a willoughby, I will measure mine up and give the measurements over the weekend if Sandgroper cannot get to the forum.
I started out with nothing
And still have most of it left.

Hi All,
In response to Sandonkid's request for my Willoughby details, I thought I would post the reply here in case anyone else wants to use my design. It has worked great for me. We gave it a fair hiding at Mud Tank last year and it did everything I expected. It dismantles for easy storage. Once the base and Sieve holder is removed, the rest just folds "flat" and we carry it in a vinyl bag.
Sorry the pics look cluttered but I wanted all the info together where possible.
Hope you find it useful.
Cheers

Hi Sandgroper
I asked a 'silly question' according to the Forum section title.
I got a brilliant answer..... the plans of your willoughby.
I am certain tht many others will also benefit from your generous response.
Thanks a lot
Dennis
ps... dont assume that Bunnings is always better priced on matal items. ( generally speaking however Bunnings are Great for Products & Price)
Many Thanks Again Sandgroper

Gday Dennis,

glad you got a good answer - a really great set of diagrams and plans for anyone to use.  Thanks Sandgroper.

Havent had any luck with second hand sieves - we got cleaned out of these a short while ago and havent been able to track any down.  Andrew may know of some hiding in the back shed but he is away for the next week overseas.

Maybe others can help here?

cheers

I'm thinking of making one of these.

One thing though, I see that they sit on the ground. How does that go with your typical sapphire wash from the gemfields? In my experience, the wash from several different parts of the field is usually clayey and you have to keep grinding the concentrate in the sieve with your hand as you wash it, in order to break up all the lumps. Bit hard to do that if it sits on the ground without constantly bending your back.

Perhaps one on a taller post so the washing drum can sit on a stand at about belly button height might be the go?

mate you get around the clay part by soaking it first.  you then swirl it, get all the rocks to bottom and tip out the light clay matrix stuff.  usually 1-2 hours and ur good to go.
