Boulderboy, I have used Liquid Glass as a finish on Boulder Opal and Tiger Iron, it fills the holes and gives the stone a nice smooth finish.

Back on topic.

I have heard of using photocopy/laser printer toner as a blackener   instead of soot.  There is usually some left in spent cartridges.

If uou have a black only copier/printer you should also be able to use waste toner from the waste container on the copier or printer.
