Fossicking locations in Illawarra and South Coast
« on: June 25, 2012, 07:24:11 PM »
Hi

I'm new to the forum and kind of new to fossicking.

Recently a Geologist friend of mine told me that there were sapphires at Carrington Falls, Jamberoo Mountain.

I was bored one morning so my mum and I went to check it out, armed with random makeshift tools we spent hours trying to find sapphires, we came home with so many rocks, some of which I think may be the real deal.

The thing is though, now I'm hanging to go out and do it again and soon.

I was hoping that you guys may be able to suggest some good places around Wollongong and the South Coast where I may be able to find some pretty rocks.

Do or do not, there is no try <3

Hi and welcome from a fellow Gongian!

Pretty much any beach you wander along has petrified wood around here, as do some of the creeks.  You can get sapphires up near Robertson too - I've found a couple of small ones.

Much of the sapphire-bearing ground locally is in national park now, where fossicking is a bog no-no...

findrocks01 please note Carrington Falls is in a National Park so sorry you cannot fossick or even pick up and take away a rock
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

K-dizzy, I live in the land that everybody forgot,  I'm on the FAR South Coast at Merimbula, there is a small group of us that go out fairly regularly.  I have been fossicking down here for over 10 years, there is not suppose to be any gems in this area, but I have found Amethyst, Thundereggs, Garnets, Petrified wood, Jasper, Chalcydny, Epidote, Rock crystal, Agate and Smokey Quartz.  There is suppose to be a reef of Rose Quartz on a property near Wyndham, but I have not ventured out there yet.  Have a look on my Picture Gallery and you will be able to see s ome of my local finds.

Cheers

No problem guess K-dizzy found what she was looking for or went on to other things.
