where to get the best opals in AUS

Where should I go to buy the best quality opals in Australia? can somebody give me some hints on how to distinguish them?

what kind of opal are you thinking about, there are many varieties all which can be classed as "good" quality. Black, Crystal, Boulder etc... Likewise are you after opal rough, or fully cabbed and polished stones...

Australian Opal mines website have plenty of pictures with prices. Do you realise if you ask for the BEST opal it could cost you in excess of $6000 per oz.  AOM have a big range of quality and price and usually its all on approval.

As cappy said, without knowing exactly what you're after, it's very difficult to offer advice.

The opal shops in LR such as Lost sea, Opal cave, Sunset opals, Peters opals, etc are predominately geared towards the tourist trade ie: cut stones, jewellery, etc.

I would suggest you just go to Ebay, look around at the different types of opal avaiable, prices, etc. At least you can get a better idea of what you want, and how much you're willing to pay.
