Is there any trading market in Australia to sell Gemstones
« on: December 16, 2012, 05:50:27 PM »
My father in law is in Gemstone business for 30 years. He sells Ceylon Sapphire and gemstones in Canada, USA and Asia. He would like to target Australian market as well and asked me if I can provide some details. I don't know anything about it as I am an IT professional. He has stones rang from $10000 to 400,000

So,

1. Could anyone tell me where Gemstones buyers be found in Melbourne, Sydney or Australia?

2. Where to buy rough Sapphire stones in Melbourne?

3. Where to find gemstones cutters and polishers in Melbourne ?

Thanks in Advance

If the stones are really valued at those prices, then you're chasing a select group of richer clientel and gem investers. Best your father sends someone that knows what they are doing for the leg work and visit the selling areas ... sale of one item would pay for airfares and expenses.

Could you please tell me where those selling areas located in Melbourne - or Australia?

My father in law does not have any good impression on gem market in Australia based on his memories back in 1970. Since I am here he wants to give another try.

I have been asked to do some market research also. I am also interested in learning that business as that is the best and easy money making way, but too risky.

I don't know much about the gem market down there, high end or not. What I would do though is get in contact with some of the the high end jewlers down there (just search details on the web) to see if they are interested or could point you in the right direction. I assume that there are a concentration of high end jewlers/diamond merchands in Melbourne as there is in/around the George STreet mall in Sydney. It is a bit of leg work but obviously worth it if that is what you want to do.

Good luck.

This is a really difficult one. In our experience, you can try contacting jewellers but they tend to just ring their usual wholesaler when they need stuff and are rarely interested in gems offered to them even if of high quality. They usually want it for low cost and on impossibly generous terms - this is a generalisation but we made little headway when we tried this approach.

For very expensive stones such as you are suggesting, I think there would be very few manufacturing jewellers operating in that market niche and possibly might be difficult to get access.

There is no general gem market such as those in Thailand (and I presume Sri Lanka) so not really a place you can go to find a group of buyers/sellers together in a market environment. Not sure if anyone tried this when mining was much more active in Australia but has not been anything like this to my knowledge when we were actively mining.

Sorry to be a bit negative but you have a difficult job. Buyers for very high end stones do exist but they are difficult to find. It will be a matter of personal introduction and word of mouth I think.

Good Luck.

1. It is a little surprising your father-in-law doesn't already have in place a network that can reach Australia given the value and exclusivity of the gems.
2. Why buy sapphire in Melbourne, or Australia for that matter?
3. What is your father-in-laws business name and business details for due diligence purposes. and
4. Don't give up IT!

1. I am actually not surprised by this. In our experience, most jewellers tend to buy from the established wholesalers. The very few that are interested in high-end gems will often go to Thailand or Sri Lanka because they can get them cheaper there - they will have their own network of contacts. So to decide to come and sell direct here will require some new contacts/strategies. Just not sure it is very practical - ie. benefit might not be worth the effort/cost compared to trying in larger markets such as USA or Europe.

2. Is the OP wanting to buy sapphire?  I thought this was a selling question.

3 and 4. Fair points.

good luck though.

cheers
