Sorry...my text didn't come through...I was wondering how much it is to get quartz cut and any recommendations on the style of cut that best shows off the stone? Does it take a long time to polish quartz? There are some lovely pieces that would look pretty if just were a little shiny...might need to visit the Aussie Sapphire warehouse and pick up some grit.

Hi Soccermum, Quartz is a pretty hard mineral so costs more to cut than some others because they have to use diamond on it. If you google Lambert Gem Industries in Thialand they will have prices on their website. Many of us non-cutters get our gems cut there...it ranges from about $1.00 a carat upwards for some stones.

Geology Rocks, I really dig it.

Here is a piece of smokey I found at Tinga Sands.
Pollished it up at Lap Club. Lots of water and take it slowly :)

I dont care if the glass is half full or half empty.
Drink whats left or throw it away.
Either way stop staring at the damn thing !

I've never cut or polished rutile quartz... I presume that would pose its own problems!

Yeah Capt'n rutilated quartz is a bugger to polish. I eventually got a good shine on a piece (posted somewhere on the forum a while ago) after plenty of cursing. It was from Tingha Sands.

Hey Capt'n, check this one
http://www.americanthai.com/auth_topaz.php?img=top9217b.jpg
Can't remember where I actually saw a faceted round with a single rutile needle right down the middle, that was cool but the link above shows a nice effect albeit in Topaz but same deal of course in quartz.
Think the trick is to get one with needles short enough to stay within the gem however you cut it.
Keep em comin!!!
