Ridge opal comp.
« on: May 01, 2013, 10:37:16 AM »
Just found this, been looking for weeks for carving shows to enter, did not know they even had a carving division, both pro and amateur divisions, the hard part is finding quality crystal opal without fracture, any ideas of suppliers, most will not part with good opal.

oh mick, sorry, didn't even cross my mind. There's also the Yowah comp and the Winton/boulder one. Will double check the latter for carving but reckon it's in there.
Give me a few to check the links for you.

oh, try Justin from black opal direct. ..would love to play in his shed.

Now I feel a right dingbat, they used to have an object d'art section in the Yowah comp. Might be worth contacting if the section still exists.

hmm, think that's just jewellery. You could team up with a jeweller that enters tho,,food for thought.

Mehoose, I contacted Justin, he has no pieces large enough, I was going to carve the same shape as my malachite mobius triangle, finding good quality material at a reasonable price is near impossible, does not need to be translucent, good color potch with no inclusions or cracks, only wanted a piece around 40X30x11 approx, willing to spend up to $500, hears a pic of the shape.

You might need to do the tromp and chat with the boys on the fields to find something.
there's the list of wholesalers and buyers you could ask. I'll wade through my bookmarks and see if there's anything promising.
try absolute opals, he has some pretty rough. you might have to reduce size or carve a completely different shape which would only add to your arsenal which is a good thing. he does have some yummy stripe stuff..way cool.
Keep em comin!!!

well that piece looks like it already has some natural undercuts which you could incorporate..ok, not thinking of what you had in mind but definite possibilities. Fingers crossed for you. Did they say how long the piece has been out of the ground for? Field?
Keep em comin!!!

Not sure how long ago it was mined, still going for abstract shape, hope its good enough to do a mobius or I may design another shape, I want to do another mobius arrow head like the malachite one I broke, totally my fault, dropped it on my steel cap boot after around 20 hours shaping, some like to follow the natural shape of opal, agree with that on a valuable piece, but I consider this free form not carving, the arrow head was going to be my soft stone entry for the gemboree.

Bummer Mick, Maybe wear slippers??? or tie a string to  it and the end to you???? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Like the look of that opal mate. Not sure what you mean by "I consider this free form not carving,"... it would still be carving free-form is a design style.
