2 cut or not 2 cut?
« on: June 18, 2013, 12:40:04 PM »
Hello everyone,

Have been looking at these 2 Topaz of mine for quite a while. The question is would you cut them at this size they don`t land in the sieve that often.

The rear one is clear as a bell 230c and the front is 107c blue, any ideas everyone?  beers

It depends on what you want to do with them once cut. Either cut for maximum yeild or cut into smaller stones for earings etc. I would cut them for yeild and cut as large a stone as possible from each, always looks impressive.

Always keeping in mind the loss of up to 30% in the cutting but big ones would make a big statement, I agree with Klingon.

The other thing you could do or have done is carving :)

Cut a very big stone.  :) If they had shown good crystal sides, I may have hesitated.  :-\

Cutting them is an incentive to find another big one or two.  ;D

Apparently size does matter, I agree that the bigger ones do look impressive, but they tend to be harder to use when making jewellery.  Hard decision, glad it's not me.

I've got a big blue (205 carats) I found and will never cut it. It's awesome the way it is. So...... each to his own.

Couple of nice stones you have there. A really difficult decision. It is easy to say 'cut' when it is not your stone. I've got a nice big "blue" topaz still uncut. I always think I could never 'uncut' the stone once the decision was made. It is a nice brag piece as it is.

Happy decision making. BTW I say 'cut' (yes, I know I'm a hypocrite!)
Baaa humbug, not enough fossicking time!

Thanks for the replies everyone ;D I think Jamo summed it up in that you can never uncut it and like Wwoofa said time to go get a spare first, the 107 is cactus, but will hang onto the big one longer :)

  i :)
It is a hatd choice l have a couple of topaz l would nevet cut, they are unique  just as they are,   l would never chop up a big stone for lots of little ones cause there are lots of those in the world already.
I think you already know what you would like to do, they are beautiful and rare, well done on finding them.
