What is Christinite and Where Can I Get Some
« on: July 16, 2013, 05:41:50 AM »
I am interested in entering the Hervey Bay Gem & Mineral Club competition.  One of the designs calls for cutting M. M. Christinite.  What is this material and where can I get some?

From what I have read and can ascertain it's Glass.

This taken from another website:
Cristinite is a trade name for a variety of silica-based doped glasses of varying SG and RI, but all sold under the name "Cristinite". It's just a made-up name for marketing.
The material is cheap and easy to cut and polish if you are not too aggressive at the coarser stages, because it is rather brittle.

This makes it an ideal material for test cutting or maybe even earrings or pendants for re-sale, so long as the customer is warned "It's brittle!"

Try this site:

Hi Tom,

The prizes for novice competition are christinite rough donated by Sherwood Rocks & Gems who have the christinite. You might email lloyd.hosking@bigpond.com for information on availability and specifications, etc. Lloyd has all the answers as I believe he makes it from crushed chrisophrase and his business is donating the prizes.

I have faceted several pieces and it looks and polishes fantastic. They have bi-color and color change christinite as well as many other great colors. Other suppliers I know of are L.A. Gems P.O. Box 792 Stanthorpe, Queensland 4380, Australia Email; admin@lagems.net and Brian & Robyn Pepperell P.O. Box 586 Ipswich, Queensland 4305, Australia Email gem_stones@bigpond.com.

I hope this is of some help.

Regards,
Wayne

I would go for the other contacts mentioned for supply.

I looked at the website Deb showed and as she mentioned, it is impossible to contact them. This is a prime example of the kind of website NOT to buy from. Absolutely no contact details (not even a mobile phone number/PO Box which would raise a red flag for me). No contact form to ask questions and no information about the business, store policies such as returns, refunds, privacy. Online shopping has been around for a while now so it is easy to get a bit casual about it but buying from that kind of website is just asking to be scammed.

good luck in the search.

cheers Leah

We have Christinite at our club for sale. Our faceting teacher was the tester for the makers of christinite.

The comments about the website mentioned may be a bit harsh. The info states that
the site is under construction so it may be a legit. site after all. Nevertheless not very sensible putting up a site until it is fully functional.

The shopping cart appears to be fully functional but they have not bothered to put any kind of contact information - a bit lame.

Should be the first thing to be done and I would be amazed if the ezimerchant software does not have most of that built in and just needing to be filled in with basic info. Seems very strange that there has been no attempt to do this so far - it is surely basic business sense.

When we applied for our merchant facility, the NAB bank audited our website to make sure contact info, privacy policy, etc were in place. Had to repeat the process when we upgraded our merchant facility recently and I think it is a good idea. There are consumer protection laws in place - merchants should be aware of relevant laws and customers should be able to trust in their protection.

Apologies if this site belongs to a member or someone they know but I think it should be a priority to add some "trust" stuff urgently if they intend to continue selling online - there are too many scammers out there already and it is not difficult to set yourself apart from that.

Point taken , Leah. I hadn't tried to use the Cart and my knowledge of shopping websites is even smaller than the sapphires I've found when fossicking.

Around $3.50 or so for a piece about the size of a five cent piece (large enough for a good size faceted stone). We use it to teach and practice faceting. Comes in many colours as well as colour change.
