Tingha Sands fossicking
« on: September 30, 2013, 05:21:05 PM »
Hi to all you central NSW folk.  I may get up that way in the nearish future and have been trolling through ALF (as you do) looking for potential stops.  Tingha Sands is a bit of a stand out for me as I'm keen on getting some grass stone which sounds to be in abundance there.  Can anyone assist with details on access as it sounds like it's part of a commercial operation.  Any other locations for grass stone would be appreciated for consideration.

Thanks, Garry

PS I've just had a look on Google maps and there seems to be a lot of sand/gravel beds around Tingha itself, are they all commercial operations?

Bucket, I was at Tingha Sands in 2010. I discovered that it was best to call the operation beforehand to find out which days the conveyor belt/pulsator thingy was working because it made the job of finding stones much easier. All I had to do was stand there as the gems dropped off the belt onto a pile below, and pick them up - watch your head though. I was there outside of the NSW school hols just to ensure I wasn't vying for a good spot in front of the machine with anyone else. Otherwise it's a matter of who dives on a likely stone 1st.
I found quite a few pieces of grass stone in the day-and-a-half I was there.
Behind the machine are piles of gravel to sort through, too.

I was there on a field trip  after minerama this year just down from the conveyor belt there, are  massive mounds of sand. Covered in quartz and smoky quartz , I suggest you look there

Spoke to Christine who volunteers / runs Tingha Caravan Park. They asked me to let people know that you can do tours from there if interested after Minerama & can stay there in their park.
