Minerama 2014 Trip Report  Fossickeract
Mudpuddler may send some photos to post later and correct any mistakes or omissions. :P
Arrived Wed 6th tried to visit Leah and Andrew but fooled by new electronic gysmo gate and open/closed sign turned to closed  ???. Phone call sorted that out so was able to place my order for club grits and hand over type metal polishing disk for resurface thanks Andrew. :-*
Thurs 7th Pretty Vally Settled into last years hole and had some quiet success, lots of small sapphires and zircons including 3 sapphire cutters just over 2c each and couple smaller Bankok sapphire cutters  :) . More sapphires than zircons this year. Then we had a shower with water running an inch deep down the paddock. Still the sun came out again to dry us off and it didn't discourage Muddy who was in a hole scrabbling some good wash.
Fri 8th  Lonewood Well it wasn't but next door and we found 5/8 ths of bugger all by lunch time and headed back to the show as a storm threatened  :( . I found some good Torrington Emerald cutters to buy, and a couple of African purple sapphires which made my day. We did see the beautiful 12.2 c  :D  blue found by Les and Pam at Lonewood which wasn't Lonewood.
Sat 9th Through the fence Yarrow Creek. Sand and more sand  :( but this time we settled into a spot near a lady with a bottle full of good finds from the day before. A lovely 2c red garnet and similar size
pale blue sapphire the latter with a couple of cracks unfortunately and many small chips.
Sun 10th  was show and rest day and we sailed off to Nundle on Mon 11th , after picking up grits, to visit the Praise mine where we got plenty  :D and the pine forest where we got chips of zircons and caught up with Les and Pam for dinner at the pub.
Some not so positive observations, as a long term Minerama visitor
The weather ( 3 hours straight sunshine woould have been good)  ;)
The name change from “Fossicking and Gemshow” to “Jewellry and Gemshow”  ::)
This was “to attract teenage girls” and “a lot of people didn't understand what fossicking was” Hmm well I did see 3 teenage girls which means they had about 20 stall holders each to attend to them.
Really despite a couple of noteable finds newish fossicking areas do need to be found in my opinion, unless you have a sudden invasion of teenage girls, and Lonewood's pile of fresh dug wash WAS  MISSED.                                                 beers Ted

Good Point Ted, and one that the Minerama Committee needs to be aware of that for next year's marketing, it needs to be made very clear that this particular patch of land is not "Lonewood".  I sincerely hope that the event organisers will check well in advance of promotional material being printed and organise properly with the landholders as to correct details as the advertising potential has been confused for next year as it was not Lonewood at all :o

Another Great point Ted: Aussie sapphire is open "By Appointment Only" except for advertised openings like this year's Minerama main weekend.  Please Email, Text or Phone ahead to avoid disappointment or confusion and to gain entry through the Security Gate ;)

cheers
Andrew

Great vid Muddy!

Thanks to everyone involved to bring Minerama together had a great time! beers

I Arrived at Minerama 2014 at the Fossicker Caravan Park with my daughter and for a bit of practice as centring (it had been a while) we started to sieve up some gravel from in front of the camp kitchen. Soon a bit of colour showed then a huge sapphire bomb. Very surprised to find such a large stone at the caravan park. Pretty Valley was fun even with the rain filling up my waders, was on the hunt for a nice dog tooth sapphire. Came away with heaps of small zircons, a small party sapphire, topaz and a beautiful clear piece of quartz.
Lonewood (next door) was different from previous years but produced a lot of small colour and a beautiful dog tooth. Yarrow creek was very picturesque and I loved the place. Came away with a few small finds to wet the appetite and can't wait to get back there! All up a great trip.

Pics posted in Media album Minerama 2014.

Good showing of Minerama Muddy  :)

Ted you need a bigger chisel (from a jackhammer) and a 15 lb hammer for the prase mine and a pair of thick pigskin gloves for whoever is holding the chisel. ;D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Thanks guys. Must say I was torn between taking a record of the fossicking and getting muddy in the creeks, but did manage to do both! Missed catching up with other ALFers though - hopefully another time.

Big thanks to field trip leaders Lord Thunda and Capt Mendoza who made it all possible.

(PS Well spotted Jamo!)
