I have more photos of the monster, it is flawlwss internally, l have oiled it to improve clarity, it is for sale at $3 a carot, which because of the bi colour is half what it could be.  I am handling this sale for the widow of my friend, a vast collection of facet rough and minerals, she has a lot more smaller pieces of bicolour topaz, contactme for info.

More than 3 years have slipped  by since the posting of that lovely blue Kilkrankie "diamond."
Several people expressed interest in buying it so I am curious as to what became of it all. Did you get a valuation?


Recently there was a TV series on prospectors in the USA where they were scrabbling for topaz on individual claims on a mountain side. They would dig out a piece about a third of the size of that Kilkrankie piece and say, "Wow. That's a $2000 topaz."

I second that Harry. I recall being interested in it at the time but its hard to drop $2400 on a stone without being able to inspect it. It seemed like it had good potential. Running the numbers the 800 carat rough might cut a 200 carat stone. GemVal now requires a subscription for topaz so I'm only guessing here, but say between $30-$50 per cut carat, that's potentially an $8k stone (perhaps more if provenance is taken into account). However allowing for flaws, its more likely to result in 2-3 stones at maybe $6k. Still, not a bad return for a weeks work to a facetor, assuming a buyer can be found.
Happy to hear other opinions on the value if I'm off the mark, and also an update of what became of the stone.

Killicrankies are worth a good be more than standard topaz in Tassie. There is a big blue one in the shop on Flinders just under 3000ct from memory but not as clean as this one.
