Weld River
« on: August 04, 2020, 03:42:34 PM »
Hi Alfers. I would like if someone here on this forum could confirm, if they have heard or know about the blocking of access by local council, to the Weld River fossicking site? I would hope this is only a rumour or least a temporary action by the council to keep campers out during the Cov-19 crisis.
Cheers
Malachi  ::) ;)

Hi Malachi,
I can't see how they could. I know the farmer has been complaining in the past but this is about an area outside the fossicking area. You would have to be keen to be in the creeks up there atm lol. Maybe it's the camping area at the fossicking site. Ring or send MRT an email. It's probably the few who are trying to make a living fossicking wrecking it for everyone else. But plenty of other creeks just need a tassie prospectors license.

It's worth mentioning that prospecting licences in Tasmania have recently increased to five years duration, and are a little clearer, though still a bit tough IMO.
From MRT website:
Quote
Mineral Resources Tasmania, in consultation with the public and relevant State regulatory bodies, has reviewed and improved current Prospecting licence and Group Prospecting licence policies. This has simplified the Group Prospecting Licence application process resulting in improved terms for individual Prospecting Licence holders.
Be sure to also read the CONDITIONS RELATING TO PROSPECTING LICENCES pdf document available on the same site, (prospecting licence forms section):
http://www.mrt.tas.gov.au/forms_and_information/tenement_forms
Cheers,

The site apparently had some squatters living on it, MRT had them evicted and made it difficult for them to return, according to them, the work was a little over zealous as it was not supervised. They intend to rehabilitate the site but it is not closed, just a little bare at the moment. Roughcreations, while they have increased the permit length, their price has only increased marginally over the 12 month one they used to issue. $32 for 5 years is better than $29.90 for one year in my opinion.
Common sense isn't exactly common

No argument with me on that one! It should result in more people doing the right (legal) thing and getting a licence now. MRT have tightened the definitions for sluices and high-bankers etc. - not much room for interpretation there. Can't even use an electric pump, sigh.

Thanks on the feedback. That's good news ! I do hope MRT do the right thing by us and restore the access again. Was concerned after the wife showed me a post on You tube. Cheers!  ;)

I was quite happy to recently get the 5 years, heaps better deal.

Have you got a link to youtube :)
I'm tempted to head up north hunting some smokie soon, creeks are too cold for me atm.

MB. Try getting yourself a wet suit similar to one surfers use in Victoria in winter. Will keep you warm and keep nasty bugs off you too.  Happy hunting for the smokies! I wish i was living in Tassie right now! :(
Cheers!
PS MB was you wanting the YOU TUBE address to what I'd referred in comment?  ::)
