if they're 'young' I'd probably go on a tour. More often than not the owner might salt their spot while they're not looking. Also they get the benefit of knowledge with what to look out for.
If a kid is keen, so is the tour leader.
By the way, welcome to ALF Fiona.

Ted (fossickeract) recently visited Harts Range - he might be able to help with some tips on where to go.

some info:

http://www.gemfossicking.com/harts_range.html
http://www.gemtree.com.au/

http://gemfossicking.com.au/mudtank_fields.html
http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/10728/m09_web.pdf

check on legalities - I think you need a fossicking permit in NT but perhaps not in SA.

good luck and welcome to the forum

cheers

Fiona,
What would be worthwhile is joining a lapidary club. While your son is too young to use the equipment, all related to insurance, this allows you to go on field trips with any club within your state. Also interstate trips you can go along as a guest but you are still covered by insurance. This is worth looking into. I think the age is 12 to be able to use wheels etc at a club. You would have to check this out.

Merryn.

I would second Merryn's suggestion if it is practical for you - a lot of clubs really welcome young members as they know the hobby depends on new people joining up and getting interested so they often go out of their way to help the kids.

An interest in rocks can also develop into a career - lots of really interesting stuff happening in geology these days and for a lot of these people, it does start off when they collected rocks as a kid.

Fossicking is also a really good way of getting out and seeing Australia which is never a bad thing for young people.

cheers

Just to clarify.
Even if the club is far away, which you wouldn't be using the clubrooms yet, you are able to attend field trips which are generally on a weekend day. So you meet and follow in a group or you meet them there.

Hi Fiona,
Yes take the tour at Gemtree garnet trip, you will get all the instructions and equipment there and find garnets. Sieves " Desert Dwellers" have them, tourist info will direct you to them. Take a drive to the Mud Tank field and chat to the fossickers in their holes they will happily provide a wealth of info and show you the zircons they find. Fossicking permit you just fill in a form and keep it with you available from Gemtree.
