Lava Plains General Permission Fossicking Area FN Qld

Lava Plains fossicking area

Lava Plains, located between Mount Garnet and Greenvale, is well known as a collecting locality for sapphires. Small deposits of spinel and zircon have also been extensively worked in this area in the past.

Two general permission fossicking areas more than 120 hectares in size have been designated at Lava Plains, with the Mines Hill general permission area currently open to fossickers.

Very interesting, somewhere else we can go now when staying in Mareeba. :)

But how far do you have to walk? We carted all our gear to the top of Mount Gibson the first time because we weren't sure the car would make it, that wasn't much fun.

Area is only 1 km wide at the road and goes back either 1 km or 1.5 km before you run out of fossicking area. See link to map  :)

That is great news Jimny :-)
I am in Cairns and have been wanting to go out to Lava plains for ages !
If anyone else up there is keen for a trip to Lava Plains I would love to know.
This fossicking area has been talked about for years as being in the planning.

Might pull in for a look next month when I am traveling through to Agate Creek.

Seems they have plans to open up a second area at a guess after it has been mined.

Elliot sold the lease some time ago I believe.

Definately be worth a look when I'm up there in June - the only time of year to be in far north QLD hotthirsty

A couple of people who have been there have told me that the stones are often found not in a gravelly wash but also just lying in the blacksoil.

A mate of mine is heading up to Agate Creek in a few weeks, (lucky sod) and we were looking for information about this but basically came up blank, The Dept has a very sketchy map online but its practically useless for anyone that doesn't already know where it is.
Can someone give us co-ordinates or at least some distances, or a mud map to help find it.

thanks
Paul

Agate Creek location: http://fossicking.daruthe.com/fossicking.php?type=location&id=192

Took me quite some time to interpret their dodgy maps. I had even tried asking for the coordinates, but they just handed me a link to their map lol.

Woops,
Thanks for the reply Daruthe, no problem finding Agate Ceek, its the Lava Plains area we are attempting to find.
My bad. In my excitement I forgot to proof read my post.

Lava plains is exactly 100 klm  south of garnet on the eastern side of the highway, from the greenvale side the car park is about 3 klm north of Wyandotte creek.

There's a new galvanized turnstile and the GPA map.

Nigel.

Ok, gotcha. I've added the Laval plains location http://fossicking.daruthe.com/fossicking.php?type=location&id=32467

I will fill in some more details for that location when I get home
