Grabben Gullen Fun
« on: April 18, 2015, 02:25:51 PM »
Hi all, I'm a newbie to the fossicking scene, since I was a young kid I've been interested in rocks etc, but until recently hadn't had the time or opportunity to take it up as a hobby. I live not far from Grabben Gullen and have seen some interesting videos of fossicking there. I stumbled across this site while doing some research about the area and realised that some members have been down to the creek for a paddle. I went last week with pan and sieve in hand, totally clueless as to what I was doing or looking for (apart from what I had seen on the videos lol). Hubby was kind enough to dig around for me and as we didn't have a lot of time he put some gravel etc in a tub and brought it home for me. I have MS so I'm not able to handle a lot of heavy digging or anything so it worked out well for me as I've spent a few days out in the sun going through the stuff we got. I 'think' I have found some stones, certainly there seems to be quite a number of zircons and a few sapphires. I enjoyed it that much that all I can think about now is going back to try again! lol.  ;D

I'm sure you will have lots of fun fossicking, especially with someone to dig and carry gravel!

Thanks Findem! Only wish I knew if the specimens I have put aside are gems, I'm probably saving quartz lol.

Hi MissyP, put your gems on a torch and see if light comes through them, if so they are gem s,if not they may be bombs (no translucent gems) ie pretty rocks

Thanks Mushy! I have been back a couple of times and the last one was the best so far. Got quite a number of crystal like specimens, varying colours from yellow, orange, mauve and some blue green that weren't quite as clear. Also collected a lot of spinel with red variations. :)

Hi Chriso, its private property probably only 100m each side of the public area but if you stick to the creek they don't mind. Also very, VERY cold, wet and windy out here. I had planned to go myself but its not my kind of weather lol. Head to the left side of the bridge and walk left along the creek for best areas. Are you highbanking or just sieving? Cheers Missy :)
