Another fossicking area closed!
« on: April 27, 2015, 05:46:43 PM »
I called in at Norseman WA today and immediately went into the Tourist Info shop to get my fossicking permit for the private property just outside town, to be told that due to some stupid people (not my real terminology), the site is now closed to everyone.  Apparently the owner called in one day and found a number of people in there without permits and loading trailers, they were not tourists apparently.

There is still the public area on Hyden Rd, but it's well picked over. You can get directions from the Info Shop but it's actually about 10.5 kms out of town on Mort Haslett Dve (Hyden Rd) on the right.  It's marked with a sign.

The stupidity and greed of some people - just wrecks it for everyone else who does the right thing.

Very depressing.

No permits for a private fossicking location and loading trailers!  >:( >:( >:(

What were they going to do with it all?  Set up a market stall?

Hope they were made to unload their trailers before they left. The rest of my comments are unprintable.  >:(

Was this the agate location that is now shut?

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.

Disappointing Bucket after traveling all that way.  If that was a private area on private land, the owner should have had them charged.  I'm not sure of the details but strict limits need to be enforced with heavy fines in some areas.
People making a living fossicking is a difficult issue, including those that take multiple tonnes of agate out of Agate Ck year on year, trailer load after trailer load. I'm so pleased I don't fossick for profit, it would take the enjoyment out of it.

Lefty, the locals refer to it as agate, but it is also known as opalite.  A good variety of colours can be found, I did pick up some small white with black dendrites and maybe some brown with black.  I'll have to go back with more equipment to this other site next time.
Here's a photo.

Infuriating and depressing at the same time. The mentality seems to be "rush in and grab absolutely everything that can be taken in one hit - that way, who cares what happens to everybody else, all that matters is that you got what you wanted".

Just like the mongrels who ripped out the Springsure opalised wood deposit by machine without permission, resulting in the closure of the area. They got what they wanted - several tonnes of opalised wood - so who gives a rats that their actions caused it to be shut down for everybody else eh?
